Description

Voidmaw, an independent game development studio, has officially confirmed that its highly anticipated action roguelite Katanaut will be launching on all major consoles, including the Nintendo Switch.

While the specific release date for consoles has not yet been announced, Katanaut is scheduled to arrive on Nintendo’s platform following its initial debut on PC.

The upcoming Nintendo Switch version will be available digitally through the Nintendo eShop. Katanaut is poised to stand out in the crowded indie scene by merging the tight-paced action of 2D platformers with the deep progression and procedural variety of roguelites.

Drawing strong inspiration from Metroidvania classics and the intense, methodical combat found in soulslike games, Katanaut places players aboard a massive space station teetering on the brink of disaster.

As the protagonist known simply as Naut, players will navigate through treacherous corridors once filled with life, now overrun by twisted, hostile forms of the former human inhabitants. According to Voidmaw representatives, Katanaut features advanced time-manipulation mechanics that allow players to revive after defeat, ensuring that each run through the station offers new pathways and challenges.

The environment is dynamically structured, with ever-changing layouts and enemy encounters.

Throughout these runs, players can collect memory fragments, which persistently contribute to character progression by unlocking lost skills and talents once belonging to the station’s fallen crew. "Every descent into the station is unique, with haunting environments and unpredictable threats awaiting at every turn," a spokesperson for Voidmaw explained.

"We wanted players to feel a sense of discovery and tension, making every run a blend of strategic combat and exploration." Katanaut’s gameplay gives players the freedom to approach combat with their preferred style—whether favoring up-close precision blade work or fighting from a distance.

The atmospheric presentation is underscored by flickering lights and eerie setpieces, enriching the game’s sense of suspense as players unravel the mysteries behind the station’s catastrophic downfall. On launch, Katanaut will be offered as a digital download through the Nintendo eShop.

While an exact release window for the Nintendo Switch version has not been disclosed, the development team is committed to bringing the full Katanaut experience to console fans after releasing on PC. As Voidmaw continues to expand its footprint in the indie gaming landscape, Katanaut represents the developer’s ambition to combine genre-defining elements into a fresh and challenging adventure.
