Nintendo Switch 2 Reaches Five Million Units Sold in Japan, Dominating Local Hardware Market

Nintendo continues its stronghold on the Japanese gaming market as the Nintendo Switch 2 surpasses the milestone of five million units sold domestically.

With Japan recognized as Nintendo’s most influential territory, the rapid adoption of the new hardware underlines the company’s sustained popularity and the enduring appeal of its exclusive game library.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June 2025, making this sales achievement especially noteworthy when compared to other current-generation platforms.

For context, Sony’s PlayStation 5, released in 2020, has moved over 7.5 million units in Japan to date, but the Switch 2’s accelerated trajectory clearly demonstrates Nintendo’s continued resonance with Japanese consumers.

Latest Software Sales Leaders on Nintendo Switch 2

Meanwhile, cross-generation favorites dominate, with Microsoft’s Minecraft for Nintendo Switch, originally launched in June 2018, still shifting 5,186 physical copies this week—and a lifetime total of over 4.18 million in Japan alone.

Capcom’s Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection for the original Nintendo Switch also stands out, selling 4,956 units in the week and 23,194 overall since March 27, 2026.

Nintendo’s expansion of Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Switch 2 also maintained strong momentum, selling 3,706 copies this week and approaching 100,000 units since its January 2026 debut.

Hardware Rankings Highlight Nintendo’s Market Strength

According to the latest sales figures, the Switch 2 remains Japan’s best-selling hardware platform, moving 59,543 units this week for a lifetime total of 5,011,059.

In comparison, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition sold 12,141 (1,248,515 lifetime), while the original Switch OLED Model contributed another 7,468 to its formidable 9,526,329 tally.

The Switch Lite and standard Switch models have lifetime sales of 6,903,964 and 20,027,045 units respectively, further underscoring Nintendo’s deep reach in the Japanese market.

In the broader context, PlayStation 5 Pro (341,548 lifetime) and Xbox Series X family devices have considerably smaller footprints in Japan, indicating a platform preference that continues to favor Nintendo devices.

The sustained momentum behind the Switch family, accentuated by the Switch 2’s strong launch year, reaffirms Nintendo’s unique ability to capture both new audiences and longtime fans.

Nintendo’s dominance in Japan is backed not just by innovative hardware, but also a consistent slate of high-performing exclusives.

These latest sales figures fortify the Switch and Switch 2’s place at the top of Japan’s gaming charts, even as new challengers enter the scene.
