The update is a free upgrade for existing owners of the Nintendo Switch version and preserves the game’s Friend’s Pass feature, allowing a single purchase to enable two-player co-op even if only one player owns the title.
It Takes Two, developed by Hazelight and published under EA Originals, originally launched in March 2021 on PC and consoles and later arrived on Nintendo Switch.
The game earned widespread acclaim for its inventive cooperative design and captured several industry awards, establishing it as a standout co-op experience.
What’s included in the Switch 2 upgrade
- Native Switch 2 performance targets: Hazelight says the new edition will run at 1080p and 60fps in Docked Mode.
- Faster load times compared with the original Switch release.
- GameShare support to expand local co-op and sharing options on the new hardware.
- The Friend’s Pass remains in place, preserving the game’s low barrier to co-op play for one-player ownership scenarios.
Cross-play arrives day one
Hazelight also confirmed that cross-play support will go live on the same day as the Switch 2 upgrade.
According to the studio, the Switch 2 version will be able to play online with players on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS4 and PS5.
This brings It Takes Two into a wider cross-platform multiplayer ecosystem for the first time on Nintendo’s next-generation hardware.
Switch 1 players and cross-platform limitations
The studio noted that cross-play functionality is more limited for the original Nintendo Switch version: Switch 1 owners can only play online with a Switch 2 user if the Switch 2 player downgrades to the original Switch build for that session.
The launch focus is clearly on exploiting Switch 2’s increased power and new networking options.
Critical perspective
In a 2022 review of the original Switch port, our outlet observed that the Switch release made “now-standard graphical compromises” for the platform and that handheld benefits were less clear for an always-split-screen co-op-only experience, while still praising the port for maintaining performance and the game’s overall quality.
With the visual and performance enhancements on Switch 2, Hazelight’s co-op showcase looks positioned for renewed attention from players who missed it on other platforms.
Availability and pricing
Hazelight has positioned the Switch 2 edition as a free upgrade for existing Switch owners; details for new purchases and any eShop listings will appear on the Nintendo eShop ahead of or on the 15th October launch.
