Yacht Club Games Sets Sights on Success with Mina the Hollower Release on Nintendo Switch

Yacht Club Games, the acclaimed indie studio behind the widely successful Shovel Knight series, is preparing for a pivotal launch with Mina the Hollower on Nintendo Switch.

This highly anticipated title, inspired by Game Boy Color-era aesthetics and classic Zelda gameplay, first entered the spotlight following its Kickstarter campaign in February 2022.

Now, after a significant development journey marked by restructuring and delays, Yacht Club Games is candid about the stakes involved in Mina’s release.

A recent Bloomberg report shed light on the internal challenges the studio has faced over the past several years.

Following the global success of Shovel Knight, Yacht Club Games experienced a period of contraction and adaptation, grappling with the impacts of the pandemic and operational shifts.

Studio founder Sean Velasco described the forthcoming title as "make-or-break" for the future of the company.

In discussions with Bloomberg, Velasco conveyed that a strong commercial performance is critical.

He stated, “A quarter-million units would leave us feeling confident about our direction, but anything closer to 100,000 copies sold would raise significant concerns for our studio’s future.” Mina the Hollower began conceptual development in 2019, led by designer Alec Faulkner.

Initially, the studio split its team to tackle two projects: Mina and a 3D Shovel Knight follow-up.

However, as ambitions grew and project management challenges surfaced, Yacht Club made the strategic decision to reunify its staff, with Velasco stepping into the director’s role to refocus efforts on Mina.

According to artist Sandy Gordon, the team’s early division may have contributed to delays, noting that a more unified approach from the beginning could have accelerated the timeline by multiple years. Despite a missed release window and the costly nature of game development delays, Yacht Club Games remains resilient.

The studio is adapting its operations by embracing full remote work and consolidating its focus to a single project at a time.

Velasco affirmed that even if Mina the Hollower struggles commercially, Yacht Club Games would persist, though additional funding would be necessary to sustain future endeavors. Currently, anticipation remains high for Mina the Hollower.

The title’s demo—available now on the Nintendo Switch eShop—has drawn praise for its blended retro style and modern gameplay sensibilities, running at an impressive 120fps on the upcoming Switch 2 hardware.

As the gaming community awaits an updated release date, one thing is clear: Mina the Hollower represents both a homage to beloved classics and a crucial chapter for Yacht Club Games’ evolution.
