Square Enix has officially announced that Final Fantasy XIV Online will arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 this August, bringing the acclaimed MMORPG to Nintendo's next-gen handheld-console hybrid.
The reveal took place during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival keynote in Anaheim, where producer Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida and Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu confirmed platform and subscription details for the new port.
According to the announcement, Final Fantasy XIV on Switch 2 will launch with a one-month free early access period.
After that promotional window ends, players will need to maintain a subscription to continue accessing the game.
Square Enix stated that the Switch 2 edition will require its own separate subscription plan rather than sharing the existing cross-platform subscription used by PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox, and PC players.
Square Enix is offering a 50% discount on the Switch 2 subscription for players already subscribed on other platforms.
The company also clarified that a Nintendo Switch Online subscription is not required to play Final Fantasy XIV on Switch 2.
Rewritten for clarity, the core subscription update reads: Square Enix confirmed the Switch 2 edition will operate under an independent subscription model, distinct from the existing multi-platform subscription for PS5, PS4, Xbox, and PC.
Existing subscribers will receive a 50% discount on the new Switch 2 subscription.
Producer Naoki Yoshida demonstrated the new port on stage, showing his Lalafell character running on a Switch 2 dev kit during the keynote.
The company has not yet published detailed system-performance data or exact pricing for the Switch 2 subscription, but the early-access period and discount for current subscribers were presented as part of the launch plan.
The Switch 2 announcement coincided with another major reveal: Final Fantasy XIV's seventh main story expansion, Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, which is scheduled for release in January 2027.
Square Enix also noted that the game's Free Trial will be expanded to include the Shadowbringers expansion beginning 28 April 2026, allowing new players to access more of the game's story content at no initial cost.
