Retroware's Toxic Crusaders: retro brawler headed to Nintendo Switch, Steam demo live

Retroware's long-gestating beat-'em-up Toxic Crusaders is edging closer to release, with the developer confirming the game is in development for Nintendo Switch, PC and PlayStation and a playable demo now live on Steam.

The project adapts characters and themes from The Toxic Avenger franchise — the original 1984 Troma film created by Lloyd Kaufman — and the early 1990s animated series Toxic Crusaders, which debuted in 1991.

The studio first announced Toxic Crusaders in early 2023.

Retroware describes the project as an old-school, four-player brawler that channels the aesthetic and cast of the TV show: players can take control of Toxie (The Toxic Avenger), Yvonne, Junkyard and Headbanger across multiple stages.

The developer has stated the title will feature seven stages, motion-comic style cutscenes and full voice acting, and that a wide roster of characters from the series and the broader Troma universe will appear.

The game's promotional trailer includes moments drawn from the original film and series, including a diner hold-up sequence.

In journalistic terms, the trailer stages an armed robbery in which a character orders patrons to hand over food under threat of lethal violence.

Retroware's public materials indicate the adaptation tones down the explicit gore and adult content of the 1984 film to fit the animated show's sensibilities.

Toxic Crusaders arrives amid renewed interest in retro-style licensed beat-'em-ups.

Dotemu's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge launched in 2022 and helped re-establish a market for modern releases that evoke 16-bit arcade brawlers.

Retroware's effort follows that wave and targets both nostalgia-driven players and new audiences on Switch, Steam and PlayStation platforms.

For players who want to try the game before launch, a demo is available on Steam.

Retroware has not announced an official release date; the studio continues development and has been sharing updates and assets ahead of a full launch.

Fans tracking the title can follow Retroware's channels and the game's Steam page for the latest information and release announcements.
