Zelda Voice Actress Patricia Summersett Discusses Her Role in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Nintendo Switch

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Nintendo Switch marked a pivotal moment in the celebrated franchise’s history, as Nintendo introduced voice acting for the first time, imbuing its beloved characters with new depth and personality.

Released globally in March 2017, Breath of the Wild quickly became a critical and commercial success, selling over 30 million copies and redefining open-world exploration while ushering the series onto both the Nintendo Switch and Wii U platforms.

A cornerstone of this transformation was the inclusion of voice actors, with Patricia Summersett voicing Princess Zelda in the English version.

Summersett’s work brought a new emotional resonance to the character, resonating with longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Reflecting on her initial involvement, Summersett explained that she was provided with important thematic and stylistic details during early briefings.

"I was given enough background on the universal themes and aesthetics to guide my performance, but the identity of my character was kept confidential until shortly before the recording process began," she shared.

This strategic approach helped Nintendo maintain secrecy around the project, aligning with its reputation for tight-lipped development cycles. As an experienced actor and lifelong Zelda fan, Summersett experienced a unique connection to her work.

She enjoys playing Breath of the Wild on her own Nintendo Switch, savoring the game’s diverse activities such as hunting, cooking, and gem collecting.

"I haven’t finished the game yet, but I love exploring, especially collecting gemstones and discovering new recipes—it reminds me of the sense of adventure I had as a child," Summersett revealed. Her history with the franchise runs deep: she grew up playing The Legend of Zelda on NES with her sisters and also experienced other titles like Ocarina of Time on Nintendo 3DS and Twilight Princess.

When asked about the creative choices behind character accents, Summersett noted, "Decisions on character accents are ultimately determined by the creative leads.

While every actor makes suggestions, the final vision rests with the game's directors and producers." With the launch of Breath of the Wild’s downloadable content (DLC) packs, interest in the game's story and characters surged.

Summersett expressed enthusiasm for reprising her role if future projects or expansions call for Zelda’s return.

"It would be an honor to return as Zelda in any future sequels or DLC.

My time working with Nintendo will always hold a special place in my career," she affirmed. Summersett also commented on her broader aspirations within Nintendo’s universe, saying she is inspired by the innovation showcased at major events like E3 and would gladly lend her talents to other iconic franchises. Recounting her favorite moments from the recording sessions for Breath of the Wild, Summersett shared, "Every moment in the studio brought something new and exciting.

Watching the animation and performing these emotional scenes as the game took shape was extraordinary." When reflecting on the legendary Triforce virtues—power, wisdom, and courage—Summersett emphasized the importance of balance.

"The unity of power, wisdom, and courage creates an incredible force.

I strive to be guided by all three." The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild stands as a hallmark in Nintendo’s storied legacy on the Nintendo Switch, celebrated for its innovation, narrative depth, and vibrant character portrayals.

Patricia Summersett’s contribution as the voice of Zelda remains a defining element in the game's continued acclaim.
