Medabots Trademark Dispute Resolved: Imagineer Secures European Rights, Paving Way for Potential Nintendo Switch Releases
The long-standing legal battle over the Medabots trademark in Europe has finally concluded, as Imagineer — the Japanese developer behind the beloved series — secured a comprehensive victory.
This resolution marks a significant step for the Japanese multimedia franchise, which has struggled to maintain an official presence on European shores in recent years.
Background: The Medabots Legacy
Medabots, developed initially by Natsume, made its debut in 1997 for the Game Boy.
The franchise quickly grew to encompass manga, a popular animated television series, and an extensive lineup of video games spanning multiple generations of hardware, including Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, original PlayStation, GameCube, and most recently, the Nintendo Switch.
Despite its global fanbase, only a handful of these titles managed official releases outside Japan, resulting in dedicated Western fans clamoring for broader access, particularly in North America and Europe.
Legal Dispute and Recent Developments
Imagineer’s fight to reclaim the Medabots name in Europe began in earnest following an incident in 2018.
Kevin Comadrán de Frutos filed for the European Medabots trademark after it lapsed, which effectively blocked Imagineer from publishing new titles under the iconic name across the continent.
During this period, Comadrán was linked to several unauthorized projects, including a crowdfunded Medabots IndieGoGo campaign and a controversial cryptocurrency initiative named 'Medacoin.'
In an official statement on its website, Imagineer detailed the conclusion of the lawsuit: "Following the announcement made on September 25, 2023, regarding our favorable ruling in the Spanish lawsuit over the 'MEDABOTS' trademark, the Supreme Court of Spain has dismissed the appeal by the opposing party on October 29, 2025.
The judgment in our favor has now been finalized.
We remain committed to safeguarding intellectual property rights and fostering a healthy content business."
What This Means for Medabots Fans and the Nintendo Switch
This decisive legal victory allows Imagineer to move forward with the Medabots brand in Europe.
The announcement has sparked renewed hope that European fans might soon see classic Medabots games or collections officially released for modern platforms such as the Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo eShop.
The Japanese Switch has already seen similar Medabots collections, and this legal clarity could pave the way for further releases in the West.
While Imagineer has not yet announced specific plans for European releases, the conclusion of this trademark battle removes a major barrier to future Medabots content.
The franchise, known for its RPG mechanics and robot-collecting gameplay, remains a nostalgic favorite, and its return is eagerly anticipated by both long-term followers and newcomers on platforms like the Nintendo Switch.
As the Medabots brand regains its footing in Europe, industry watchers and fans alike are looking forward to official updates from Imagineer, with hopes that classic and new Medabots titles will soon join the lineage of iconic Nintendo games accessible to all.
