Gaming Historian Bids Farewell: Norman Caruso Ends YouTube Career with Rare Nintendo Legal Documents

Gaming Historian, the popular YouTube channel helmed by Norman Caruso, is officially coming to an end after nearly two decades of in-depth content about classic video games and industry history.

Best known for meticulous video essays chronicling Nintendo’s most iconic moments and legal battles, Caruso leaves behind a million-strong audience and an enduring legacy within the gaming community.

Founded in 2006, the Gaming Historian channel gained acclaim for its detailed research and storytelling, particularly on vintage Nintendo hardware, game development stories, and pivotal moments that shaped the gaming landscape.

Over the years, Caruso’s work brought historical context to topics ranging from the NES era through the modern Nintendo Switch platform, and attracted viewers invested in the heritage of game design and development.

Caruso shared his decision to retire the channel in a final video, stating, “I thought that after taking a break, I’d feel compelled to create new content.

To my surprise, that urge never really returned.

I made genuine attempts at crafting another video, even mentioned it on social media, but my enthusiasm just wasn't there.

I realized continuing would mean sacrificing quality, and that's when it became clear—I was truly ready to move on from The Gaming Historian.”

As a final contribution to the industry, Caruso released a comprehensive collection of legal documents from one of Nintendo’s most defining courtroom battles: the 1982 trademark dispute with Universal Studios over Donkey Kong.

The landmark case saw Nintendo defend the beloved arcade game against claims it infringed on Universal’s King Kong property.

The legal victory for Nintendo not only solidified Donkey Kong as a household name but also set critical precedents for intellectual property law in video gaming.

These rare documents have been uploaded to the Internet Archive, ensuring open public access for historians, researchers, and enthusiasts.

Additionally, Caruso has provided copies to the Video Game History Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of video games and related media.

These efforts align with Nintendo’s status as a key industry innovator—makers of influential hardware like the Nintendo Switch and pioneering participants in milestones like the Nintendo Direct showcase.

Although Caruso is stepping away from his YouTube persona, his passion for history endures.

He now co-hosts 'An Old Timey Podcast' with his wife, Kristin, exploring broader topics in world history.

“Creating The Gaming Historian was a transformative journey,” he reflected.

“That chapter of my life will always hold a special place in my heart.”

The closure of Gaming Historian marks the end of an era for retro gaming documentation, but Caruso’s contributions and careful preservation of Nintendo’s legal history will benefit both the gaming industry and its fans for generations to come.
