Comedy Central has officially announced the development of a Golden Axe animated series, marking the first time Sega's legendary hack-and-slash property will be adapted for television.
Based on the hit side-scrolling video game franchise, the 10-episode series is set to bring beloved characters and the sword-swinging world of Yuria to a broad audience, building on decades of fan enthusiasm and the classic game's lasting cultural impact.
Bringing the Golden Axe Saga to Television
The Golden Axe series, first launched in arcades by Sega in 1989, swiftly became a staple of the side-scrolling beat 'em up genre, making its way to numerous home consoles and, in recent years, digital platforms including the Nintendo Switch via the Sega Genesis Classics collection.
Revered for its co-op gameplay and fantasy setting, Golden Axe has remained a nostalgic favorite among retro gaming enthusiasts.
Comedy Central’s adaptation will be produced by the acclaimed animation studio Titmouse—known for their work on genre-defining animated series—alongside CBS Eye Animation Productions, Sony Pictures Television, and Original Film.
Notably, Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks, Solar Opposites) and Joe Chandler (American Dad!) will serve as executive producers and writers for the show’s inaugural episode, with Chandler additionally assuming the role of showrunner.
An All-Star Cast and Executive Team
The series has assembled an impressive voice cast, with Matthew Rhys bringing life to Gilius Thunderhead, Lisa Gilroy voicing Tyris Flare, and Liam McIntyre cast as Ax Battler.
Supporting roles feature Danny Pudi as newcomer Hampton Squib, and Carl Tart as the villainous Chronos “Evil” Lait.
The cast aims to balance humor with the spirit of the original adventure, paying homage to the game’s enduring appeal.
Sega’s ongoing dedication to its classic IP is underscored by the involvement of key executives as producers, including Sega Sammy Holdings Inc.
president and CEO Haruki Satomi, Sega Corporation president and COO Shuji Utsumi, and producer Toru Nakahara, widely recognized for his work on Sega’s successful movie adaptations like Sonic the Hedgehog.
Series Plot and Video Game Legacy
According to the official synopsis, the narrative follows veteran warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they unite once more to save the realm of Yuria from the persistent antagonist, Death Adder.
The twist: this time they are joined by the inexperienced and comically underprepared Hampton Squib, providing a new dynamic for longtime and new fans alike.
The Golden Axe series remains a cornerstone in Sega’s catalog, recently celebrated through Nintendo Switch ports and accolades for its global sales.
The announcement of an animated series comes amid a renewed interest in retro franchises and cross-media adaptations, positioning Golden Axe to reach both nostalgic fans and a new generation of viewers.
