The beloved wisecracking gecko, Gex, is set to make a triumphant return to modern gaming with the announcement of the GEX Trilogy for Nintendo Switch.
In collaboration with original developer Crystal Dynamics and retro game publisher Limited Run Games, all three classic Gex platformers will be re-released in a single definitive collection this summer, leveraging modern hardware while preserving their original charm.
Animal mascot platformers captured the hearts of gamers during the Nintendo 64 era, with Gex standing out thanks to his personality and inventive levels filled with pop culture references.
The GEX Trilogy collection includes:
- Gex (originally released in 1995)
- Gex: Enter the Gecko (1998)
- Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko (1999)
Each of these titles will be accessible on the Nintendo Switch, bringing nostalgic 2D and 3D platformer action to both new fans and veterans of the franchise.
The ports are powered by Limited Run Games’ Carbon Engine, a proven technology that has recently enabled faithful modern rereleases of several retro gaming classics.
The engine's compatibility brings significant enhancements, including rewinding gameplay, save-anywhere functionality, and native widescreen display options, making the trilogy more accessible without sacrificing authenticity.
Brian Lee, Project Director at Limited Run Games, emphasized the importance of game preservation and accessibility, stating, "The Carbon Engine enables us to modernize classic titles like Gex while maintaining the precise gameplay and memorable humor that fans love." This sentiment reflects a broader industry trend: bringing classic IPs to the Nintendo Switch and other current platforms in a way that retains their original identity while leveraging modern conveniences.
The return of Gex is particularly noteworthy, as the franchise was celebrated for its witty protagonist, parodic humor, and playful jabs at pop culture—traits that set it apart from its contemporaries during its original run on PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and other systems.
With support from Limited Run Games’ expertise in faithfully reintroducing retro favorites, the GEX Trilogy will give both longtime fans and new players the opportunity to experience these iconic games in their best form yet.
The GEX Trilogy is scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch in summer 2024.
Digital and physical editions are due to launch via the Nintendo eShop and Limited Run Games’ online store, respectively.
