Limited Run Games has officially released a crucial update for GEX Trilogy, making the classic platforming collection fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2.
This patch, now live, marks an important milestone for both retro gaming fans and the developers, as it resolves major compatibility issues that previously forced the game’s temporary removal from the Nintendo eShop when played on Nintendo’s latest console.
GEX Trilogy, a remastered set of titles originally developed by Crystal Dynamics, was launched for multiple platforms, bringing the quirky, wisecracking gecko back for a new generation.
The trilogy includes all three original games and has been highly anticipated by fans of both the series and retro platformers.
Published by Limited Run Games, renowned for their work in resurrecting classic titles in both digital and physical forms, the release on the Nintendo Switch 2 was met with unexpected technical hiccups shortly after launch.
According to statements from Limited Run Games, the initial Nintendo Switch 2 release exhibited critical bugs that rendered GEX Trilogy unplayable for many users.
As a result, the publisher proactively requested that Nintendo remove the game from the eShop until these issues could be addressed.
After weeks of collaborative work, Limited Run Games confirmed on June 24, 2025, that the new compatibility patch had been reviewed and approved.
The publisher advised, "If you previously purchased GEX Trilogy and encountered problems, be sure to download the latest update to experience uninterrupted gameplay on your Nintendo Switch 2." Limited Run Games further clarified that the improved version will come pre-installed on all physical copies moving forward.
Although the patch ensures stability and playability on the Nintendo Switch 2, it does not introduce special enhancements unique to Nintendo’s newest hardware.
The focus of this update remains fixing platform-specific bugs and ensuring the trilogy runs as intended, preserving the authentic feel of the original games.
The rollout of this patch demonstrates both Limited Run Games’ commitment to quality and the responsiveness of the development community when legacy content intersects with evolving hardware platforms.
With GEX Trilogy now fully functional on Nintendo Switch 2, fans old and new can once again explore the series’ distinctive humor and classic platform gameplay.
The game’s return to the eShop and the forthcoming physical release underscore the enduring appeal of retro titles and the vital role of ongoing post-launch support.
