Nintendo’s long-running transfer service Pokemon Bank is scheduled to shut down in February 2027, closing a roughly 14-year bridge between legacy handheld titles and modern Nintendo Switch releases.

Pokemon Bank first launched for Nintendo 3DS owners in late 2013, and Pokemon Home — The Pokemon Company’s cloud service for Switch and mobile — arrived in 2020 to consolidate transfers between current-generation games.

Alongside Bank, the companion utility Poke Transporter, which has been used to move Pokémon from older 3DS and DS-era titles, will also cease operation.

"With Pokemon Bank and Poke Transporter going offline in February 2027, transfers from the first seven generations into Nintendo Switch games will no longer be possible," reads a concise summary of the situation for trainers.

"Players who want to preserve legacy Pokémon on modern Switch titles should begin migrating their collections now, because some creatures and event distributions cannot otherwise be reproduced on Switch platforms."

What to prioritize: verified platform and developer context

- Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (ILCA, released November 2021) host Spinda encounters, but community and developer notes have highlighted issues with Spinda pattern data in those titles that affect transfers to Home.

If you want Spinda in your Home collection, ensure you transfer any existing pre-Switch Spinda now.

- Partner Cap Pikachu originates from Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (released 2017).

That particular partner-cap variant was distributed via QR code scanning in those 3DS games and consequently relies on Bank/Transporter for migration to Home.

- Several event-only and in-game gift Pokémon from Sun/Moon and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon remain tied to legacy systems; trainers who value event distributions or unique original trainer IDs should move those Pokémon before the shutdown.

- Mythical and legacy event Pokémon such as Victini, Mew, Celebi and Jirachi have historically required specific event items, physical media, or older hardware to obtain legitimately.

If you hold legitimate copies of those event Pokémon on 3DS or earlier cartridges, Bank and Transporter are the path to preserving them on modern platforms.

Other considerations and timeline

- Pokemon Bank has served as the canonical migration path for generations of Pokémon since 2013; with its closure, many first-generation-through-seventh-generation transfer routes will be permanently cut off for the foreseeable future.

- Pokemon Home will continue to serve as the destination for Switch-era transfers, but without Bank/Transporter there is no official route to bring many legacy Pokémon into Home.

Actionable advice

Begin auditing your Nintendo DS and 3DS titles immediately.

Prioritize event Pokémon, unique distribution variants (for example, partner-cap or Poké Ball-pattern forms), and any creatures tied to original trainer IDs you want to preserve.

Transfers can take time, so use the coming months to systematically move favorites into Pokemon Home and onto Switch-compatible games.

Have other legacy Pokémon you think need mention?

Share specifics with the community — many trainers are racing to save rare and event-only captures before the February 2027 deadline.
