At PAX East, Gearbox Software participated in an in-depth Borderlands 4 roundtable, responding to fan questions and offering further insights into their highly anticipated sequel.
This event followed the extensive gameplay showcase previously unveiled at PlayStation’s State of Play, and provided fans, industry watchers, and Switch enthusiasts with new, verified information about the direction and scope of Borderlands 4.
Borderlands 4 will take players to the perilous planet of Kairos, where they will assume the roles of one of four newly introduced Vault Hunters.
These protagonists are driven by the allure of wealth and renown, but quickly become involved in the planet’s struggle against the oppressive regime of the Timekeeper—a dictatorial antagonist who enforces a harsh order over Kairos.
As unforeseen calamity wreaks havoc upon the Timekeeper’s rule, the resulting chaos sets the stage for the signature mayhem that defines the Borderlands franchise.
Players are called to lead an uprising, forging their own path by battling through hostile mechanical foes, relentless bandits, and fierce native wildlife.
As with prior entries, Borderlands 4 promises an expansive arsenal of weapons and the return of powerful Action Skills, allowing gamers to create devastating combinations and effects tailored to their individual playstyles.
Freeform combat and exploration are at the heart of the experience, with new and familiar faces joining an eclectic ensemble of characters.
"Fans can look forward to an adventure brimming with dynamic boss battles, endless loot drops, and a blend of both new and returning fan-favorite characters," Gearbox representatives shared during the PAX East session.
The game is designed for both solo and cooperative play, supporting up to four players in local or online co-op—a foundational element for the franchise and a major draw for multiplayer fans.
Borderlands 4 is set for a global release in 2025, with physical copies heading to retail outlets and a digital launch scheduled for the Nintendo eShop—marking its debut on the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.
As the franchise continues its tradition of over-the-top action, distinctive art style, and irreverent humor, Gearbox Software once again demonstrates its commitment to engaging the Borderlands community with rich narrative depth and robust multiplayer features.
For Nintendo Switch 2 owners, Borderlands 4 represents a major third-party release, poised to leverage the upgraded capabilities of Nintendo’s upcoming system.
With its planned worldwide launch, fans can expect seamless access to one of gaming’s most acclaimed first-person shooter series, whether exploring Kairos alone or with friends.
