The Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion Mega Evolution — Chaos Rising is set to launch on 22nd May, and Nintendo Life secured early access to an Elite Trainer Box (ETB) and two Build & Battle Boxes to test the spoils ahead of release. Developed and published by The Pokémon Company, the set spotlights Kalos-era Greninja on its key art and leans heavily into Mega Evolution-themed illustration and gameplay support.
Nintendo Life staff said they were hopeful of pulling the full Illustration Rare Greninja evolution line from pre-release packs but instead focused their coverage on the broader haul from 17 packs supplied with the ETB and Build & Battle Boxes. The ETB contents align with standard premium TCG boxes: themed card sleeves, damage-counter dice, a plastic coin, deck dividers and a player’s guide to the expansion. Nintendo Life noted the inclusion of a Fennekin full-art foil promo card as a standout bonus.
Pack art for Mega Evolution — Chaos Rising features Mega Greninja ex, Mega Pyroar ex, Mega Dragalge ex and Mega Floette ex across the booster fronts. Nintendo Life’s opening pulls highlighted several playable cards: Ampharos with the Synchro Pulse ability emerged as a strong damage option; the new Prism Tower and Ange Floette Stadium cards were identified as key pieces for maximizing Mega Floette ex’s survivability; and Chesnaught’s Needly Armor ability was praised for its reactive defensive utility.
Collectors and players alike will be most interested in the set’s Illustration Rares and Ultra Rares. Nintendo Life reported attractive pulls including Illustration Rares for Xerneas and Ampharos, plus a particularly praised Chespin illustration by Atsushi Furusawa. While the Greninja Illustration Rare eluded this particular preview, the team described the overall pull quality as “very encouraging” for early buyers.
Although Mega Evolution — Chaos Rising is a physical TCG release, the Pokémon franchise maintains a strong presence on Nintendo platforms: mainline and spin-off Pokémon titles are widely available on Nintendo Switch, and announcements often appear on Nintendo Direct or through Nintendo eShop listings. For collectors, the ETB and Build & Battle Boxes remain the primary route to early access cards and promo content ahead of the set’s 22nd May launch.
