Retro Games Ltd Delays Full-Size Amiga Console Due to Ongoing Legal Disputes

Retro Games Ltd, the British developer acclaimed for its mini-consoles like THEC64 and THE A500 Mini, has announced a significant delay to the release of its upcoming full-size Amiga console, now officially named THE A1200.

The postponement stems from a protracted legal dispute between Hyperion Entertainment and other Amiga stakeholders, leaving hardware fans disappointed and the console’s release schedule in limbo. Originally slated for arrival in Q1 of 2025, THE A1200 was designed to build on the nostalgia-driven success of Retro Games Ltd’s earlier products.

The company previously released the popular THE A500 Mini in 2022, reviving classic Amiga gaming for a modern audience and showcasing the enduring appeal of Commodore’s legendary home computer line.

The Amiga series itself made its debut in 1985 and has sold nearly 4.85 million units globally across models such as the Amiga 1000, Amiga 500, CDTV, and CD32. However, Retro Games Ltd confirmed via its Facebook page on March 20, 2025, that production and release plans for THE A1200 have been halted because unresolved legal issues have stalled progress.

The disputes primarily involve Hyperion Entertainment, which initiated litigation against Amiga parties as far back as 2018.

These disputes had previously threatened even the launch of THE A500 Mini in 2019, despite legal restrictions meant to prevent such actions, in accordance with the parties’ 2009 Settlement Agreement. Representatives for Retro Games Ltd conveyed the gravity of the situation in a public statement: "Despite the dedication of our team and partners, we are unable to meet our planned release window due to unresolved legal matters impacting the Amiga platform.

This delay is entirely outside our ability to influence." While the developer itself is not directly involved in the legal conflict, its manufacturing partners have opted to postpone the project until clarity is achieved. Throughout the development of their line of retro consoles, Retro Games Ltd has been supported by companies Amiga and Cloanto, both of whom continue to work towards a resolution.

The firm acknowledges the frustration among dedicated fans eagerly awaiting THE A1200, and assures that every effort is being made to resolve the matter.

More details about the console—including hardware features, software lineup, and an exclusive new title set to debut on THE A1200—are promised once a new release date is determined. Despite the setbacks, Retro Games Ltd remains committed to transparent communication with its community.

The company is optimistic about an eventual resolution, which will allow THE A1200 to enter manufacturing and reach customers via platforms such as the Nintendo eShop and other retail partners.

As fans await further updates, the Amiga legacy continues to inspire renewed interest in retro gaming hardware and the developers who keep classic platforms alive.
