With the PlayStation 5's latest price hike taking effect and Xbox having already followed suit with increases for its Series X and Series S platforms, much of the gaming community is focused on the issue of rising video game hardware costs. Notably, Nintendo's Switch 2 has managed to maintain its launch pricing since its release last year, setting the company apart amid a wave of upward adjustments across the industry. However, this freeze may not last much longer, as a former Nintendo sales lead suggests external industry pressures are mounting.
During a recent episode of the Kit & Krysta podcast, Sean—a former Nintendo sales executive—provided insight into the complex factors influencing hardware pricing decisions. While Nintendo has thus far avoided an official Switch 2 price increase, Sean believes a change could be inevitable. "There is a multitude of external factors at play right now, significantly limiting Nintendo’s options," he observed, noting the convergence of global economic pressures.
Sean further clarified, "Nintendo seems to be taking steps to offset potential increases, particularly on the software front," alluding to updated pricing strategies for Switch 2 exclusive games in North America and Canada. By offering price adjustments for digital software, Nintendo may be aiming to soften the impact of any eventual hardware price increase.
A key factor discussed is the ballooning cost of critical components. "When oil prices surge, it doesn’t only elevate shipping expenses," Sean explained. "Substances like helium, a by-product of oil production, are essential for semiconductor manufacturing. Since semiconductors are foundational to console hardware and cartridges, increases in helium cost indirectly drive up prices across the board." Additionally, growing memory costs—amplified by heightened AI demand—and persistent inflation also contribute to these upward trends.
Sean’s comments highlight Nintendo’s attempts to navigate a challenging market: "Nintendo’s ability to adjust costs in certain areas, while commendable, won't completely shield the company from eventual hardware price rises. These interconnected pressures extend beyond the company's direct control."
Historically, Nintendo has maintained a cautious stance on price changes. In August 2025, select Nintendo accessories, including those compatible with the original Switch, experienced a price adjustment in the United States. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently reiterated a measured approach, stating the company will "carefully consider" any potential price increases and will base decisions on evolving sales patterns, production costs, current market trends, and other influencing variables.
As Nintendo weighs its options, fans and industry analysts alike are closely monitoring the impacts of global supply chain challenges and economic instability on the beloved gaming brand. Whether the Switch 2 will maintain its current price point much longer remains to be seen, but the evidence is clear: unprecedented external pressures are significantly guiding Nintendo’s decisions in ways rarely seen before.
