Ovid Works, the Warsaw-based indie game developer, has officially announced the release of Metamorphosis on Nintendo Switch.
The highly anticipated first-person puzzle platformer draws direct inspiration from Franz Kafka’s groundbreaking novella, The Metamorphosis.
Players will step into the shoes of Gregor Samsa, a salesman who mysteriously transforms into an insect, embarking on a surreal quest to restore his humanity and rescue his friend Joseph, who finds himself unjustly imprisoned. Metamorphosis tasks players with navigating an extraordinary world where everyday environments have morphed into complex, unfamiliar obstacle courses.
Interacting from the unique perspective of a tiny bug, players must leap, climb, and puzzle their way through twisting interiors, overcoming physical and existential challenges while unraveling a narrative that blends intrigue with philosophical depth. Speaking on the game’s adaptation of Kafka’s literary classic, Game Director Zaq Chojecki stated that the development team at Ovid Works has long admired Kafka’s eerie, darkly comedic, and immersive universes.
"Our aim was to pay tribute to Kafka's unique vision while fully embracing the possibilities of the video game medium," Chojecki explained.
Rather than delivering a literal retelling, the team sought to provide both fans of Kafka and newcomers with unexpected twists and inventive gameplay as they explore the unconventional world of Metamorphosis. Ovid Works CEO Jacek Debowski added further insight, describing Metamorphosis as a blend of first-person traversal puzzles—evoking comparisons to titles like Portal—with the philosophical exploration characteristic of early 20th-century literature.
According to Debowski, "Metamorphosis stands apart for its distinctive merger of interactive puzzle play and thematic storytelling.
We hope it will surprise and engage players in equal measure." Metamorphosis is set for a worldwide launch on the Nintendo Switch via the Nintendo eShop in Fall 2019.
The Switch version brings the uniquely immersive experience to a wider audience, expanding the platform’s growing library of acclaimed indie titles.
As Ovid Works continues to gain recognition for its innovative approach to narrative-driven games, Metamorphosis represents a significant milestone in blending classic literature with modern gameplay on Nintendo’s versatile console.
