Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2: Square Enix Confirms Early Access and August 2026 eShop Release

Square Enix has released new screenshots showing Final Fantasy XIV Online running on Nintendo Switch 2, timed to coincide with a Nintendo Direct presentation.

The developer and publisher previously announced at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in April that the MMORPG would enter Early Access on Nintendo’s next portable home console, confirming plans to bring the long-running title to the platform in the coming months.

Background and release details

Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu and Final Fantasy XIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida announced the Switch 2 initiative at the Fan Festival in April 2026.

The company has confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV Online will be available digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide in August 2026.

The newly shared screenshots are intended to illustrate the game running on the Switch 2 hardware and were published alongside the Nintendo Direct partner spotlight.

What players can expect

Final Fantasy XIV is set in the realm of Eorzea, where players assume the role of the Warrior of Light and undertake quests to protect the world.

Square Enix described Hydaelyn as a vivid, life-giving planet that serves as the setting for players’ narratives, and said that Eorzea is a land shaped by deities and heroes where players will be called to challenge an encroaching darkness.

Company and creative leadership

The Switch 2 announcement was led by Square Enix leadership: CEO Takashi Kiryu and FF XIV director/producer Naoki Yoshida.

Their statements at the Fan Festival laid out the timetable for Early Access and the subsequent digital release on the Nintendo eShop.

Screenshots and presentation

Square Enix’s screenshots, released during the Nintendo Direct partner spotlight, are the first official visual confirmation of Final Fantasy XIV running on Nintendo Switch 2.

These images accompany the company’s stated timeline for Early Access and the full digital release on the eShop in August 2026.

This rollout marks an important platform expansion for Final Fantasy XIV, officially bringing the popular MMORPG to Nintendo’s next-generation portable home console with an August 2026 eShop release date.
