In a recent interview with VGC, Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed the next installment in the remake saga will be substantial in size and that physical copies will require an online download.

The comments add clarity to distribution plans for the trilogy closer from Square Enix and position Revelation as a markedly large install compared with previous entries.

Hamaguchi told VGC that the game will likely need roughly 200GB of storage, a figure he said exceeds the capacity of the two-disc PlayStation 5 release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Rebirth shipped on two PS5 discs when it launched, and Hamaguchi used that comparison to underscore the technical scope of the upcoming title.

On the subject of physical media, the developer confirmed that all physical versions of Revelation will require an additional download to install.

Hamaguchi explained that, from a development standpoint, digital distribution offers practical advantages: releasing a game solely through digital channels allows teams to push fixes and updates very late in the schedule, in some cases up to the release date itself.

By contrast, he said, full-disc production demands earlier performance checks and stricter scheduling months before launch.

Rewriting his remarks in journalistic terms: Hamaguchi argued that digital-first or download-required releases allow developers to respond to major issues much closer to launch, whereas disc-based releases impose longer lead times for certification and manufacturing.

He framed this as a pragmatic choice driven by the need to work within hardware constraints and to deliver a stable product at scale.

The discussion also touched on player concerns about ownership and preservation.

Some players prefer physical copies to ensure long-term access independent of online services; Hamaguchi acknowledged those views while stressing the logistical benefits of digital distribution for development and post-launch support.

Square Enix’s handling of Revelation’s install size and distribution model highlights the broader industry shift toward large-scale digital releases.

For players managing limited console storage—whether on Nintendo Switch systems with microSD storage limitations or on other platforms—Revelation’s reported 200GB footprint will be an important consideration ahead of the game’s release.

For now, Square Enix and the development team remain focused on delivering the technical and narrative scope expected of the Final Fantasy VII remake saga.
