Description

As anticipation grows for more top-tier titles on the Nintendo Switch 2, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth stands out as one of the most eagerly awaited ports.

As the ambitious second entry in the acclaimed Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, Rebirth originally launched as a technical milestone on the PlayStation 5, celebrated for integrating cutting-edge visuals and demanding hardware capabilities.

Now, fans are keen to see how Square Enix will translate this blockbuster RPG to Nintendo’s next-generation console, particularly after the success of recent ports and remasters for Switch platforms. In a recent interview with Video Games Chronicle (VGC), Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, addressed community concerns about the Switch 2 version.

With many questioning whether Nintendo’s upcoming hardware can sustain the graphical fidelity and smooth performance seen on other platforms, Hamaguchi assured fans that the developer is prioritizing a premier experience.

"We're putting considerable effort into ensuring that Nintendo Switch 2 players will be just as impressed with Rebirth as those on other platforms," Hamaguchi shared. Drawing on Square Enix’s track record with versatile hardware optimization, Hamaguchi highlighted the studio’s process using the Steam Deck—a mobile PC considered less powerful than Nintendo's latest hardware.

He explained, "Working on the Steam Deck allowed us to experiment with bringing advanced games to mobile platforms, refining our ability to optimize across varying levels of hardware.

Although there are key differences between the Steam Deck and Switch 2, the successful outcomes on Valve’s device have informed our plans and understanding as we prepare this release." Square Enix’s commitment to technical excellence is further supported by its internal engineering advancements.

Hamaguchi, with his own engineering expertise, detailed that the team’s experience with Unreal Engine for Final Fantasy VII Remake provided flexible solutions akin to the engine's 'Nanite' rendering system.

This approach enabled rapid adjustment of graphical features, which was instrumental in simplifying the adaptation process for the Switch 2.

"Thanks to our extensive experimentation on PC and diligent optimizations, Nintendo fans can confidently expect a version that matches, or even surpasses, the first game’s quality in all aspects," Hamaguchi emphasized to VGC. With the upcoming launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2 likely targeting a 2026 release, fans of both Nintendo and Square Enix have reason to remain optimistic.

The studio’s proven adaptability, along with reassurances from key leadership, signals a strong commitment to delivering a high-quality next-gen port that respects both the legacy and aspirations of the legendary Final Fantasy franchise.
