Square Enix has officially announced the highly-anticipated release of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, set to launch on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 platforms.
This release marks the celebrated tactical RPG’s long-awaited return, bringing new life to a genre-defining classic and introducing its gripping medieval narrative to a new generation of players.
Originally acclaimed for its richly woven story and innovative turn-based gameplay, Final Fantasy Tactics first captivated audiences on the PlayStation in 1997 by plunging them into the Kingdom of Ivalice—a land torn by political upheaval and social strife.
Players follow Ramza Beoulve, a young noble entangled in a web of intrigue, as he uncovers the hidden truths behind his family’s role in history.
With its blend of complex characters and challenging strategy, the game is widely considered a landmark title in the RPG genre.
For this new edition, The Ivalice Chronicles, Square Enix is offering both an enhanced version with full modern upgrades and a classic edition true to the game’s original vision.
The enhanced version features updated visuals, a newly overhauled user interface, and—most notably—fully voiced dialogue in both English and Japanese.
The English cast is headlined by Joe Pitts (Ramza), Gregg Lowe (Delita), and a star-studded supporting lineup including Hannah Melbourn (Agrias), Timothy Watson (Cidolfus), Harry McEntire (Mustadio), and Ben Starr (Dycedarg), along with special appearances by Cody Christian (Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII Remake) and Briana White (Aerith Gainsborough).
Players preferring a more nostalgic experience can opt for the classic version, a faithful restoration of the original release with select quality-of-life enhancements such as auto-save.
Both editions aim to balance the demands of longtime fans and newcomers, blending modern conveniences with the timeless essence of the original.
The development team features several notable returns, including Kazutoyo Maehiro taking up the director’s role.
Reflecting on the announcement, Maehiro stated that reviving and expanding Final Fantasy Tactics for new hardware is a true passion project, emphasizing that both the enhanced and classic versions are designed so all players—whether returning veterans or first-timers—can experience the full breadth of Ivalice’s world.
Art director Hiroshi Minagawa added that the new visuals and voice acting seek to immerse players more deeply than ever before, while writer Yasumi Matsuno underscored the continued relevance of the game’s themes of class conflict and personal destiny—both in the late 1990s and today.
Key features of The Ivalice Chronicles include its signature tactical turn-based battles, a deep job system with over 20 classes such as black mage, dragoon, geomancer, and summoner, and more than 300 unique abilities, offering extraordinary party customization.
The enhanced version introduces a streamlined UI, tactical view scouting, battle fast-forwarding, adjustable difficulty, and expanded character interactions for a modern gameplay experience.
The classic version preserves the 1997 legacy, complete with the celebrated War of the Lions translation.
Pre-order bonuses have been announced: all editions include white equipment for Ramza, weapons, accessories, and consumable items.
The Deluxe Edition additionally offers exclusive equipment and helpful in-game items, enhancing the early-game progression for dedicated fans.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will be available both physically at retail and digitally through the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on September 30, 2025.
This release promises to reignite the legacy of one of gaming’s most revered tactical RPGs, delivered by a team honoring its historic past and embracing the future of Nintendo platforms.
