The publisher released a trailer confirming the title will arrive both physically and digitally via the Nintendo eShop worldwide on 22 October 2026.
Final Fantasy Resonance is notable as the series’ first game to adopt the studio’s retro-inspired HD-2D presentation.
Background and context
Final Fantasy Resonance is being developed by Square Enix and is based on the first story arc of the mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.
According to the publisher, the mobile source material has been “refined and extensively rebuilt” to deliver a full-fledged console-quality RPG experience rather than a straight port.
The game adopts HD-2D visuals — the pixel-art-into-3D hybrid style Square Enix previously used in titles such as Octopath Traveler and the Live A Live remake — aiming to blend nostalgic pixel aesthetics with modern cinematic presentation.
Producer remarks rewritten
Producer Keisuke Nakashima explained that Final Fantasy Resonance is the first HD-2D Final Fantasy designed specifically for consoles and is not a direct port of Brave Exvius.
He said the development team reworked story and gameplay from the ground up for a console audience.
Nakashima described the narrative as centered on vengeance and lingering regrets tied to the Crystals that maintain the world’s balance.
He also noted that players will recruit characters called Visions, who join after completing character-specific quests or compatibility trials, and that classic Final Fantasy icons appear in the new HD-2D style.
Gameplay and features
Square Enix outlined several core features for Final Fantasy Resonance:
- Cinematic pixel art: HD-2D visuals with dynamic camera angles and pixelized 3D models to heighten dramatic moments.
- Classic Final Fantasy elements: airships, crystals, espers, moogles and other series staples woven into the world and story.
- Strategic turn-based combat: a return to classic turn-based battles that emphasize exploiting weaknesses, staggering enemies, and using Resonance attacks.
- Final Fantasy Legends (Visions): recruit echoes of beloved Final Fantasy characters for deep party customization.
- Extensive side content: optional challenges including encounters with Gilgamesh, a monster Colosseum, the Chamber of Arms, and a confrontation with Ultima Weapon.
