Square Enix has released a free demo for Final Fantasy Resonance on the Nintendo eShop, available now for both Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2.

The demo lets players experience the games first chapter, roughly three to five hours of gameplay, with save data that will carry over to the full release.

Final Fantasy Resonance is slated for worldwide retail and digital launch on 22 October 2026.

Background and development

Final Fantasy Resonance adapts the first story arc of the mobile title Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and has been rebuilt for consoles as a full-fledged RPG experience.

Square Enix says the development team set out to honor both the classic and modern eras of Final Fantasy, blending nostalgic elements with contemporary presentation.

The game is also notable as the first numbered Final Fantasy to use the studios retro-inspired HD-2D visual technique, pairing pixelized characters with modern lighting, dynamic camera work and 3D environments.

What the demo includes

The new demo provides access to the opening chapter of the game, giving players a substantial preview of combat, exploration and narrative.

Progress made in the demo will transfer to the full game at launch, allowing players to continue the same save file after 22 October 2026.

The demo is available for download now from the Nintendo eShop on both Switch platforms.

Core features

Square Enix highlights several design pillars for Final Fantasy Resonance: cinematic pixel art that leverages HD-2D to create dramatic set pieces; a traditional RPG structure that brings back series staples such as airships, crystals, espers and moogles; strategic, turn-based combat that emphasizes staggering enemies and chaining powerful Resonance attacks; and a Legends system that summons Visions, echoes of familiar Final Fantasy characters, for deep party customization.

Beyond the main storyline, the game includes extensive side content.

Players can encounter the wandering swordmaster Gilgamesh, compete in a Colosseum against formidable monsters, explore the Chamber of Arms to face foes tied to legendary weapons, and confront the boss Ultima Weapon.

Availability and platforms

Final Fantasy Resonance will release on 22 October 2026 at retail and on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

The demo is already live on the eShop for both systems, offering a hands-on preview ahead of launch.
