Onimusha: Way of the Sword Confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2 — Capcom Sets September 25, 2026 Release

Capcom used a Nintendo Direct presentation to confirm that Onimusha: Way of the Sword is in development for Nintendo Switch 2, marking the series' return after a 20-year hiatus.

The new entry revives the Onimusha action-swordplay franchise, which began with Onimusha: Warlords in 2001 and last saw a mainline release with Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword follows a narrative centered on a young samurai version of the historical figure Miyamoto Musashi.

The game introduces the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical artifact that grants Musashi enhanced power to combat the Genma, otherworldly monsters invading Edo-period Kyoto from the underworld.

Capcom presented the premise and setting during the Nintendo Direct, positioning the title as a story-driven action experience rooted in Japanese history and supernatural elements.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version will include platform-specific features.

Capcom detailed that the port will support exclusive motion controls when played with the Joy-Con 2, offering players an intuitive control scheme for sword combat and additional actions such as aiming with a bow.

This implementation is presented as an extension of conventional controls designed to leverage Switch 2 hardware and its Joy-Con 2 motion capabilities.

Release and formats

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is scheduled for worldwide release on 25 September 2026.

Capcom will distribute the title both at retail and digitally via the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2.
