Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake Demo Announced for Nintendo Switch 2, Silent Hill Collaboration Revealed

Koei Tecmo has officially unveiled a playable demo for the highly anticipated Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake, set to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2.

The announcement was made on March 5, 2026, marking a significant milestone for fans of the iconic survival horror series.

In a move sure to delight dedicated players, Koei Tecmo confirmed that demo progress will seamlessly transfer to the full release, allowing fans to retain their hard-earned progress once the game officially launches on March 12, 2026. Adding to the excitement, Koei Tecmo revealed a unique collaboration with Konami’s Silent Hill F.

Players will have access to exclusive collaboration costumes as free downloadable content, further cementing Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake as a must-play title this year.

The collaboration represents a rare crossover between two of Japan’s most celebrated horror franchises, delivering fresh content for longtime enthusiasts on the Nintendo Switch 2 and eShop platforms. The remake offers a host of new gameplay features while retaining the atmospheric tension the series is known for.

During the haunted journey through Minakami Village, players can collect Broken Spirit Stones, which allow them to explore the histories of supporting characters and unravel additional lore in new side stories.

Locations new to this installment include the foreboding Umbral Mound, a burial ground strangled by ropes and deep bamboo, and the candlelit hallways of Eikado Temple, where twin statues are bound by sacred cords. Facing off against increasingly desperate and aggressive spirits, players will notice that these specters now possess the ability to sprout wings and shroud themselves in crimson malice, making them harder to defeat by rapidly regenerating health and launching frequent attacks.

To meet these heightened threats, the game introduces enhancements to the signature Camera Obscura.

Players can now use Prayer Beads to increase focus points and reload speed during combat, while Reversion Beads offer the option to reset unlocked upgrades. New to the remake are Special Shots and customizable filters, which allow for varied combat tactics.

For example, equipping the Paraceptual Filter enables the ‘Blinding’ shot, temporarily disorienting enemies and providing a much needed escape window.

The Radiant Filter, meanwhile, unlocks ‘Purging,’ which sacrifices some of Mio's willpower for amplified damage output. Beyond its combat utility, the Camera Obscura also plays a role in side exploration.

Players will encounter Twin Dolls modeled after the legendary Twin Maidens throughout Minakami Village.

Photographing and purifying these dolls in tandem unlocks new items in the Point Exchange system, deepening player engagement and replay value. Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake also debuts a comprehensive Photo Mode, inviting players to document and share their haunting experiences.

Frames, stickers, and unique visual effects allow fans to create their own mementos—and perhaps even capture a ghostly presence or two. With a highly anticipated demo, an inventive Silent Hill F crossover, and substantial new gameplay mechanics, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is poised to be a standout release for Nintendo Switch 2.

Fans can look forward to more news and updates as the launch date approaches, and can already preview the experience in the latest official trailer.
