Japan’s video game market saw an exciting week of debuts, with Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 titles driving impressive sales according to Famitsu's latest retail data.
The much-anticipated launch of Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Nintendo Switch secured the number two slot with an opening week total of 48,265 units sold.
This strong performance highlights the enduring popularity of Nintendo’s flagship franchises and their appeal across new hardware generations.
Leading the sales chart this week was Ghost of Yotei for PlayStation 5, moving 120,196 units in its debut.
However, Nintendo dominated the top spots: following the Super Mario Galaxy collection, the highly awaited Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Deluxe Edition was another standout, launching across multiple platforms.
The Nintendo Switch version sold 41,333 copies, while additional units were recorded on PlayStation 5 (24,138 copies) and Nintendo Switch 2 (12,363 copies).
Collectively, Final Fantasy Tactics demonstrated strong demand, marking a successful comeback for the tactical RPG classic under Square Enix’s stewardship.
Mario Kart World maintained momentum on Nintendo Switch 2, moving 36,572 copies in the latest week and bringing its lifetime total to an impressive 1,837,895 units.
Donkey Kong Bananza also continued its successful run, surpassing 334,000 lifetime sales.
Perennial favorites such as Minecraft (now over 4 million sold on Switch), Animal Crossing: New Horizons (over 8.2 million sold), and Pokémon Scarlet / Violet (exceeding 5.6 million copies) further underline the sustained strength of Nintendo’s software portfolio on both existing and new-generation platforms.
The sales data from Famitsu, Japan’s leading gaming publication, underscores the remarkable staying power of established franchises.
In a statement translated by our team, Famitsu noted that, “Nintendo’s core brands continue to anchor the market, with high-profile new releases and enduring legacy titles alike performing strongly week after week.”
Additionally, other notable debuts included Digimon Story Time Stranger for PlayStation 5, and several new releases for both Switch and Switch 2, such as Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
EA Sports FC 26 also maintained a presence across both PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, demonstrating the flexibility and reach of multi-platform releases in Japan.
These figures reflect continued robust consumer demand for both innovative new titles and beloved series from established developers.
As hardware transitions to next-generation platforms, Nintendo’s blend of nostalgia and new content appears to be resonating with both longtime fans and newcomers.
