The latest Japanese software sales figures are in, and Nintendo's Mario Kart World has raced to the top of the charts with a remarkable debut on the Nintendo Switch 2.

According to new data released by Famitsu, Mario Kart World sold 114,106 physical copies this week alone, bringing its cumulative total to an impressive 1,299,219 units sold since launch.

Mario Kart World debuted as a flagship title for the Nintendo Switch 2, reflecting the high expectations for Nintendo's next-generation console and its expanding software library.

The game continues the franchise's legacy of accessible, competitive racing fun and demonstrates Nintendo's continued dominance in the Japanese market. Tamagotchi Plaza, another strong performer on both Switch and Switch 2, came in second, adding 24,173 copies sold this week for a total of 126,462 on Nintendo Switch.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition contributed an additional 6,204 units (32,600 lifetime), underlining the title's cross-generational appeal.

Meanwhile, third place went to Sony Interactive Entertainment's Death Stranding 2 on PlayStation 5, which moved 11,471 copies this week and has hit a total of 83,435 in Japan. Nintendo Switch mainstays continue to post considerable numbers.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, now a perennial bestseller, added another 7,441 copies, pushing its total to a massive 6,366,260 since its launch.

Super Mario Party Jamboree is close behind, with a cumulative 1,338,302 copies sold after this week’s 6,307 addition.

Crowd favorites like Animal Crossing: New Horizons (5,915 weekly / 8,160,492 total) and Minecraft for Switch (5,480 weekly / 3,928,867 total) continue their chart-staying power. Other notable performers in the top 10 include Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, and Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma for Nintendo Switch.

Both have shown steady weekly sales, signaling strong niche followings within Japan's gaming community.

The expanded chart also features recent Switch 2 re-releases such as Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, indicating the robust demand for updated versions on new hardware. Sony and third-party publishers also saw representation.

Death Stranding 2 on PS5 managed a third-place finish, and Elden Ring Nightreign also secured a top 20 spot with 2,098 weekly sales, showing continued interest in major multiplatform titles. The comprehensive Famitsu sales data highlight the enduring strength of Nintendo’s platform and first-party software portfolio in Japan.

With Mario Kart World’s milestone launch and familiar bestsellers continuing to deliver, Nintendo Switch 2 is shaping up to be another powerhouse for both established franchises and new entries.
