Japan’s video game hardware and software markets have seen another week of dynamic shifts, as captured in the latest sales report from Famitsu.
The publication’s comprehensive analysis continues to serve as a crucial barometer for industry observers interested in the performance of major consoles, including the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch OLED, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series platforms.
For the most recent week, ending June 2024, Nintendo Switch 2 decisively topped the hardware charts, clocking in 44,150 units sold.
This represents a notable climb from last week’s tally of 40,711 units.
The Switch OLED model held a strong second place among Nintendo’s own offerings with 14,187 units, up from 9,034 in the prior week.
Switch Lite sales stood at 6,369, also showing an increase from 5,412 units previously, while the classic Nintendo Switch registered 2,554 units.
Sony’s PlayStation 5 family saw the standard PS5 move 11,597 units, more than doubling its previous week’s 4,307 units sold.
The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and PlayStation 5 Pro followed at 3,228 and 2,086 units, respectively, both showing growth week-over-week.
Xbox Series hardware continued to deliver steady, albeit smaller, figures: Xbox Series X sold 253 units, Xbox Series S 98 units, and the Xbox Series X Digital Edition 90 units.
The PlayStation 4, now considered a legacy device, accounted for 21 unit sales.
On the software front, new releases and evergreen titles vied for the top spots.
Konami’s psychological horror revival, Silent Hill f for PlayStation 5, led the chart with a robust debut of 57,475 copies.
Not far behind, Nintendo’s Mario Kart World for Switch 2 shifted 35,027 units for the week, bringing its cumulative Japanese sales to an impressive 1,801,323.
EA Sports FC 26 debuted at number three on PlayStation 5 with 11,327 copies.
Gust’s Atelier Resleriana featured prominently, with 10,425 units sold on the Nintendo Switch and 9,802 on PlayStation 5 in its launch week.
Other highlights included the 9 R.I.P.
Sequel and Donkey Kong Bananza, the latter having reached a total of 327,496 copies sold since release on Nintendo Switch 2.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and the ever-popular Minecraft, which crossed 4 million total sales in Japan, rounded out the top ten.
When asked about this ongoing market momentum, a Famitsu representative underlined the persistent strength of Nintendo’s hardware ecosystem, noting that "Nintendo Switch 2 continues to be a driving force for both hardware and software sales in the Japanese market." The PlayStation 5 family’s rebound, especially the standard edition, also signals a healthy appetite for current-generation platforms among Japanese consumers.
Famitsu’s weekly sales charts remain an essential resource for tracking trends and shifts in Japan’s highly competitive gaming landscape.
With Nintendo and Sony leading the charge and a steady stream of new releases making strong debuts, the market shows sustained vitality as it moves deeper into 2024.
