Japan’s gaming market continues to be led by Nintendo as the latest Famitsu hardware and software sales data reveals strong demand for the Nintendo Switch 2.
With significant numbers across both hardware and software charts, Nintendo cements its position as the dominant force in the country’s gaming landscape. According to Famitsu’s most recent report, the Nintendo Switch 2 sold 96,950 units in the latest week, making it the top-performing hardware in Japan by a significant margin.
In comparison, Sony’s PlayStation 5 Digital Edition came in second with 8,014 units sold, while the Nintendo Switch OLED and original Switch models followed closely, recording 7,813 and 7,314 unit sales respectively.
The Switch Lite continued to show modest demand with 4,814 units sold. Other devices, including Sony’s PlayStation 5 (2,554 units) and PlayStation 5 Pro (2,318 units), as well as Microsoft’s Xbox Series X (134 units), Series S (85 units), and Series X Digital Edition (77 units), reflected a notably smaller share of the Japanese hardware market when compared to Nintendo’s flagship devices.
The PlayStation 4 remains on the chart with 26 units, underscoring its waning but continued presence. For added context, the previous week’s numbers show the Nintendo Switch 2 selling 127,508 units, demonstrating a consistently high demand.
Other platforms experienced minor fluctuations, with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition moving 9,569 units and the Switch OLED selling 10,245 units in the prior reporting period. On the software front, Nintendo platforms again took center stage.
'Pokemon Pokopia' for the Nintendo Switch 2 leads the pack, selling 117,029 units this week and reaching a cumulative total of 658,400 copies.

Another new highlight, 'Fatal Frame 2 Remake', registered 12,115 copies sold on PlayStation 5 and 6,436 units on Switch 2. Long-standing Nintendo IPs continue to feature prominently, with 'Mario Kart World' on Switch 2 selling 8,280 units this week, boosting its substantial lifetime total to 2,865,062.
'Mario Tennis Fever' followed with 7,311 units, and the perennial hit 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons' recorded strong sales across both Switch and Switch 2 editions, reaching over 8.4 million cumulative sales on Nintendo Switch and 88,130 on Switch 2. Nintendo’s performance across both hardware and software sales remains unmatched in the Japanese market, fueled by a steady stream of new releases and enduring franchises.
As major publishers and developers like Nintendo and Capcom continue to captivate local players, the company’s dominance on platforms such as the Nintendo Switch 2 and eShop looks set to continue, shaping trends for the broader industry.
