Falcom Shifts Focus to Nintendo Switch 2 With New Releases and Platform Strategy

Falcom, the renowned Japanese developer behind acclaimed RPG franchises such as The Legend of Heroes and Ys, has formally outlined its future support plans for Nintendo’s platforms, specifically the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

Long recognized for its strong ties to the PlayStation ecosystem, Falcom’s recent strategy shift became evident during the Nintendo Switch generation, with a growing number of its titles reaching broader player bases via Nintendo hardware. A notable highlight of this transition is the inclusion of major Falcom titles in the Nintendo Switch 2’s launch lineup, notably Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, Ys X: Proud Nordics, and The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon.

These releases mark a pivotal moment for both the developer and Nintendo fans, as beloved RPG experiences are now more accessible across multiple systems.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, already available on both the original Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2, has helped introduce new audiences to Falcom’s storied franchise. In a recent interview with Dengeki, Falcom President and CEO Toshihiro Kondo confirmed the studio’s commitment to prioritizing the Nintendo Switch 2 moving forward.

Kondo explained that development efforts would now center on the next-generation Nintendo console, while support for the original Nintendo Switch would naturally taper off over the coming years—a logical progression given the aging hardware.

"We’ll be focusing on the Nintendo Switch 2 from this point," Kondo stated, emphasizing that while simultaneous releases across platforms are considered, the team’s primary goal is to continue supporting current and future hardware as effectively as possible. Kondo further elaborated that release schedules may vary between platforms due to differences in player base and technical capabilities.

While Falcom seeks to accommodate existing fans, the likelihood of major new releases for the original Nintendo Switch will diminish within the next two years.

"If it’s two years from now, it probably won’t be on the Nintendo Switch," Kondo noted, referencing the inevitable transition away from older hardware.

For example, recent decisions around which platforms to support—such as omitting a PlayStation 4 release for certain titles—reflect changing demand and a preference for focusing on active platforms like Nintendo Switch 2. Looking ahead, Falcom remains committed to serving its loyal fanbase with continued support for key franchises.

The company acknowledges that many players are still invested in prior systems, particularly PlayStation 4, but the overall strategy is clear: future RPG experiences from Falcom will increasingly prioritize the Nintendo Switch 2, leveraging its capabilities to deliver immersive new adventures.

As Falcom’s platform strategy evolves, Nintendo Switch 2 owners can look forward to a robust lineup of legendary JRPGs and innovative titles arriving soon on eShop and beyond.
