Publisher Project Egg has officially announced the withdrawal of EGGCONSOLE versions of Fray (PC-9801 version) and Brandish Renewal (PC-9801 version) from digital distribution, including the Nintendo Switch eShop.
The removal, confirmed earlier today by the company, comes without any publicly disclosed reason, leaving fans and collectors with questions about the decision.
EGGCONSOLE, the retro game label managed by Project Egg, specializes in bringing classic Japanese PC titles to modern platforms like the Nintendo Switch.
Their recent release of Brandish Renewal was particularly notable, as it only debuted this month, highlighting the unusual nature of its swift removal from the storefront.
In a statement delivered via the official Project Egg social media channels, the publisher explained: “Due to specific circumstances, distribution of EGGCONSOLE editions of Fray (PC-9801) and Brandish Renewal (PC-9801) will be discontinued.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to players and all parties involved.
We appreciate your ongoing support of EGGCONSOLE.”
Despite the removal from the Nintendo Switch eShop and other digital platforms, Project Egg has assured players that those who have already purchased these games will continue to retain access.
Owners can still redownload the titles even after their removal, ensuring existing customers do not lose their investments or digital libraries.
Both Fray and Brandish Renewal are notable entries in Japan’s rich PC gaming history, originally released on the NEC PC-9801 system—an influential platform in the Japanese market during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The EGGCONSOLE initiative has played a key role in refreshing these once-hard-to-find games for the current audience on Nintendo Switch, preserving their legacy for new and returning players.
The removal highlights the evolving challenges of digital game distribution, where licensing agreements and other logistical circumstances can unexpectedly affect game availability.
As with other digital titles, fans are encouraged to purchase games promptly if they are interested, as availability is not always guaranteed.
