Capcom Officially Begins Development on Resident Evil 1 Remake for Modern Platforms

Capcom has officially begun full development of a Resident Evil 1 Remake, reaffirming their commitment to revitalizing the classic survival horror franchise for new and returning fans.

Recognized as the developer behind the iconic Resident Evil series, Capcom continues to leverage its expertise in horror game design and narrative evolution, consistently updating beloved titles for current-generation platforms including the Nintendo Switch. The announcement follows the critical and commercial success of previous projects such as the Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 3 Remake, which modernized the original games with overhauled visuals, improved controls, and dynamic camera systems.

With Resident Evil 1 Remake now in production, the game is expected to move away from the static camera angles of the PlayStation-era version, potentially delivering an experience more in line with Resident Evil 2 Remake's third-person perspective and atmospheric presentation. According to prominent Resident Evil insider Dusk Golem, Capcom has already initiated the production process on the Resident Evil 1 Remake.

In their words, “Capcom has started full production on a Resident Evil 1 Remake, though it remains several years from release at this time.” This confirms that while excitement is growing, players will need to wait as Capcom continues to polish and update the series hallmark.

The developing Resident Evil 1 Remake joins an ambitious slate of Capcom projects within the franchise.

The company is currently working on additional Resident Evil content, including the Resident Evil Requiem DLC, a Resident Evil Code Veronica Remake targeted for 2027, Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 0 Remakes—with the latter positioned for a 2028 release—alongside the next main series entry, Resident Evil 10, planned for 2029.

Each of these projects reflects Capcom’s ongoing strategy to refresh older titles and introduce them to platforms such as the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, while also releasing associated content through the Nintendo eShop and other digital storefronts. Since its original 1996 PlayStation debut, Resident Evil has remained one of gaming’s most influential survival horror franchises, with Capcom achieving a significant milestone—over 146 million units sold worldwide as of early 2024.

The enduring popularity of the series underscores the high expectations fans have for upcoming releases, including the Resident Evil 1 Remake. As Capcom advances in the production of the Resident Evil 1 Remake, further details regarding platforms, gameplay features, and release windows are expected to be announced in upcoming Capcom events or Nintendo Direct presentations.

Until then, the remake stands as one of the most anticipated projects in survival horror, aiming to introduce new audiences to the mansion’s secrets while honoring the series’ storied legacy.
