Description

Square Enix, a revered name in Japanese role-playing games, has officially unveiled Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined—a modern remake of the beloved classic Dragon Quest VII—set to release on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

As fans eagerly anticipate fresh visuals and updated gameplay, recent details from Square Enix clarify how the game will work across these evolving Nintendo platforms. In a recently published FAQ, Square Enix addressed a key concern: there will be no upgrade path from the Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined to the Nintendo Switch 2 version.

This means that players who purchase the game for the original Switch will not receive a complimentary or paid upgrade to the Switch 2 edition.

Instead, gamers are advised to carefully select which platform they wish to play on, as purchases will be locked to the version bought. Furthermore, the company explicitly outlined that save data between the two versions is not compatible or transferable.

According to official statements, "the Nintendo Switch version and Nintendo Switch 2 version are treated as separate games.

Therefore, save data cannot be shared or transferred between the two, in either direction." This applies to both digital and physical releases. Another important note for collectors and physical media enthusiasts: the Nintendo Switch 2 version will launch as a Game-Key card, a new format not shared by the standard Switch release of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined. The clarification extends to in-game performance as well.

Square Enix has indicated that playing the Switch version of Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined on a Nintendo Switch 2 console will not unlock enhanced features or improved graphics.

The game will run identically to its original Switch release, without taking advantage of the Switch 2's increased capabilities. This approach is consistent with previous Square Enix releases on the Nintendo family of consoles.

Titles such as Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake and Octopath Traveler 0 have also launched for both Switch platforms without offering upgrade paths or save data transfers.

While this policy may disappoint fans hoping for a seamless generational transition, it provides clarity ahead of launch and maintains transparency around cross-gen game experiences. Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined continues the legacy of the iconic RPG series, promising enhanced visuals and refined gameplay for both new and returning players.

As the Switch and Switch 2 platforms evolve, Square Enix is ensuring that consumers make informed decisions with respect to which edition best fits their gaming setup. With a robust legacy and strong fan demand, Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined aims to make a significant impact on both current and next-generation Nintendo hardware when it launches.
