Square Enix has officially announced Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, an ambitious remake of the classic Japanese role-playing game, set to launch on both Nintendo Switch and the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2.
This highly anticipated title was unveiled during today’s Nintendo Direct, marking the latest in Square Enix’s efforts to modernize its legendary Dragon Quest franchise following last year’s Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and the upcoming Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake scheduled for next month.
As one of the most celebrated entries in the Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest 7 originally captivated fans with its rich narrative, expansive exploration, and memorable cast.
With Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, Square Enix aims to retain the heart of the original while introducing a host of enhancements that bring the experience firmly into the modern era.
Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined introduces a fully overhauled visual style, blending the iconic character designs of renowned manga artist Akira Toriyama with a new hand-crafted 3D aesthetic.
Characters, environments, and dungeons have been brought to life with diorama-inspired visuals, delivering a unique and vibrant presentation that honors the series’ legacy.
According to Square Enix, the remake features a streamlined storyline that remains faithful to the original while providing enhanced narrative clarity and new side quests, stories, and minigames.
The core turn-based battle system has been reworked for added dynamism, including updates to the vocation system.
New mechanics such as the “Moonlighting” feature—allowing characters to use two vocations simultaneously—as well as the “Let Loose” ability and the “Monster Master” vocation offering “Positive Reinforcement” perks, promise to deepen gameplay for both newcomers and series veterans.
Players can once again journey alongside favorites like Prince Keifer and Maribel, daughter of a local mayor, as they unlock fragments, solve puzzles, and explore varied worlds filled with bustling towns, treacherous dungeons, and a plethora of quests.
Square Enix has also implemented numerous quality-of-life improvements, such as a redesigned user interface and streamlined access to important information, ensuring a smoother experience for all players.
Collectors and digital enthusiasts alike have options for pre-orders.
The Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined Collector’s Edition, available exclusively through the Square Enix online store, includes the game, a steelbook case, a Smile Smile plush, a ship-in-a-bottle figure, and downloadable content packs like The Road of Regal Wretches, Luminary’s Livery, the Jam-Packed Swag Bag, and a Ruff Costume.
A Digital Deluxe Edition is also set to release, granting 48 hours of early access, an exclusive costume for Ruff, and three launch-day DLC packs.
Early adopters, regardless of edition, will receive the Early Bird Bonus, which offers a Dragon Quest 8 costume for the Hero and three Seeds of Proficiency to boost character stats.
Additionally, digital purchases include the bonus Slime Shield item.
The initial trailer, showcased at the Nintendo Direct, offers fans a first look at the refreshed visuals and gameplay features.
Further gameplay debuted during the 2025 Tokyo Game Show, with an extended preview airing during the event’s broadcast.
Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined reinforces Square Enix’s commitment to revitalizing beloved classics for a new generation on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
