The mainline RPG was first revealed five years ago under the title Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, but details have been scarce since its initial announcement.
The new communication clarifies the project’s creative direction and development status while confirming the involvement of key series figures.
Series creator Yuji Horii described the new story direction as centering on a young protagonist plagued by unusual dreams.
Horii framed the narrative as an exploration of what lies beyond those visions, suggesting the team has steered the project toward a more optimistic, forward-looking theme than originally planned.
Square Enix also confirmed that Akira Toriyama, the longtime character designer for Dragon Quest (and creator of Dragon Ball), contributed character work for the project; Toriyama passed away in 2024.
The update also references the series’ musical legacy through arrangements tied to Koichi Sugiyama’s compositions.
Executive producer Yosuke Saito explained the lengthy silence around the title by outlining a substantial development reset.
Saito said the team encountered obstacles with the original Flames of Fate build, prompting a personnel reshuffle and a decision to restart work from the ground up.
He framed that choice as necessary to align the project with the team’s evolving vision of a mainline Dragon Quest experience, and noted that the game’s logo and subtitle were changed to reflect the new direction.
Alongside the development update, Square Enix released a reveal trailer and the first look at the protagonist for Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams.
The company also announced Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, reinforcing the franchise’s continued presence on Nintendo platforms and in digital storefronts such as the eShop.
This announcement marks the most concrete update on Dragon Quest 12 since its initial reveal.
Fans and industry observers can expect further news as Square Enix continues development under the revised creative plan.
