DOOM (2016) Switch 2 Compatibility Issue Resolved in Latest Bethesda Update

Bethesda has officially resolved the rare autosave crash affecting DOOM (2016) when played on Nintendo Switch 2, confirming the game's continued support on Nintendo's next-generation hardware.

This update comes after reports emerged in January regarding a compatibility issue where the Switch version of DOOM would crash during autosave sequences in backward compatibility mode on the new device. DOOM (2016), developed by id Software and ported to Nintendo Switch in 2017 by Panic Button, quickly became known as a technical achievement, introducing the acclaimed first-person shooter experience to portable gaming.

With the launch of Nintendo Switch 2, both Nintendo and game publishers have been actively working to ensure the broadest possible library compatibility, allowing fans to enjoy existing titles on upgraded hardware.

In a statement released by Bethesda Support, the company confirmed, "DOOM (2016) has been updated on Nintendo Switch to resolve a rare autosave crash encountered when playing on Nintendo Switch 2 in backwards compatibility mode.

The Nintendo Switch 2 eShop compatibility notice will be updated soon to reflect this change." Earlier compatibility notices on the official Nintendo site detailed that while the game was officially supported on the Switch 2, "game behaviour may vary from Nintendo Switch", with some players experiencing force-closes after autosaving in certain situations.

Until now, the temporary solution was simply to reopen the game and continue using the same save data, but this new update permanently addresses the problem. DOOM (2016) remains one of the most celebrated shooters of the past decade and represents a significant milestone in bringing big-budget action titles to the Nintendo Switch platform.

Panic Button's work on the port received widespread praise for balancing visuals, performance, and gameplay authenticity.

The Nintendo Switch 2's backwards compatibility continues to be a focal point for both Nintendo and its publishing partners, with regular updates ensuring that popular titles like DOOM retain their playability and high quality. Players can now confidently return to DOOM's frenetic battles on Nintendo Switch 2 without the concern of losing progress due to autosave crashes.

For continued updates on Switch 2 game compatibility and Bethesda releases, keep an eye on official announcements and the Nintendo eShop.
