Donkey Kong, one of Nintendo's most iconic characters, steps back into the limelight with the all-new 3D platformer, Donkey Kong Bananza.
Announced during the Donkey Kong Bananza Direct presentation, this action-packed title launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on July 17.
Developed by Nintendo, Donkey Kong Bananza promises a fresh adventure filled with dynamic co-op gameplay, character transformations, creative new modes, robust collectibles, and deep amiibo integration—setting the stage for a landmark entry in the Donkey Kong franchise.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of Ingot Isle, Donkey Kong Bananza opens with a thrilling discovery: golden bananas hidden deep within the Earth.
As the story unfolds, Donkey Kong is swept even further underground by a catastrophic storm.
There, he joins forces with a newfound ally, Odd Rock—revealed to be none other than the talented singer Pauline.
United by their shared quest, Donkey Kong and Pauline must traverse the vast Underground World through teamwork, smashing obstacles, solving mysteries, and harmonizing their abilities.
Players can take control of Donkey Kong to wield a robust moveset encompassing the Dive Punch for burrowing, Hand Slaps for uncovering secrets, and Turf Surfing for quick traversal.
By combining these straight-forward yet versatile moves, players will encounter a variety of puzzles and collectibles.
A key mechanic is the Bananergy system—collecting jewels known as Banandium Gems allows Pauline to amplify Donkey Kong’s power, unlocking unique transformations such as the incredibly strong Kong Bananza, the speedy Zebra Bananza, and the aerial Ostrich Bananza which gives DK flight and offensive capability.
Donkey Kong Bananza is designed with both solo players and friends in mind.
Thanks to Nintendo Switch 2’s features, local co-op is available by sharing Joy-Con 2 controllers—allowing one player to control Donkey Kong while the other commands Pauline and unleashes her signature vocal blast through innovative mouse functionality.
Expanded multiplayer options include GameShare for split ownership local play and GameChat for online voice and video communication, bringing flexible ways to enjoy Donkey Kong Bananza’s co-op action.
The journey is further enriched by a cast of returning characters, such as Cranky Kong and his steadfast friend Rambi, while new faces like Grumpy Kong, Poppy Kong, and Void Kong deepen the lore.
Opposing the heroes is the villainous Void Company, responsible for the chaos beneath the planet’s surface, as well as Pauline’s transformation into Odd Rock.
Strategic depth comes in the form of extensive collectibles and character upgrades.
Banandium Gems, Chips, and Gold are scattered throughout diverse environments, exchangeable for skills, cosmetics, and in-game items at specialized shops.
Fossils serve not only as a fun discovery but can be turned in at Style Shops to unlock new costumes for both Donkey Kong and Pauline—some featuring gameplay benefits—enhancing visual customization.
Additional game modes—including a comprehensive Photo Mode for capturing in-game moments, and DK Artist, where players use Joy-Con 2’s mouse controls to draw and carve designs—showcase Donkey Kong Bananza’s commitment to creativity and replayability.
Amiibo support stands out as a launch highlight, with new Donkey Kong and Pauline figures unlocking exclusive content and bonus tiles within the game.
Compatibility with other Donkey Kong amiibo further extends rewards, while all amiibo can be used to gain helpful in-game items.
As Donkey Kong Bananza swings onto Nintendo Switch 2 on July 17, both longtime fans and newcomers can expect an adventure brimming with innovation, personality, and a wealth of content—solidifying Donkey Kong Bananza as one of 2024’s most anticipated Nintendo releases.
