Donkey Kong Bananza Unveils DK Artist Mode and Pauline Gameplay in Latest Nintendo Direct
Nintendo has again captivated fans with its latest Nintendo Direct, putting the spotlight on Donkey Kong Bananza—the anticipated platformer developed for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
This new installment in the iconic Donkey Kong franchise promises not only classic platforming but also innovative features that leverage the advanced capabilities of Nintendo's next-generation hardware.
One of the headline reveals is the introduction of DK Artist mode, an engaging creative suite designed to let players interact with the game in a whole new way.
Reminiscent of Super Mario 64's playful title screen—where users could stretch and manipulate Mario's face—DK Artist mode expands on this idea by empowering players to sculpt and paint in a 3D space.
Utilizing the Switch 2's newly integrated mouse functionality, players can directly paint onto virtual sculptures, meticulously carve away details, or even append brand-new visual elements.
The toolset allows for thorough customization, including the ability to dynamically adjust lighting and apply whimsical effects—such as the signature banana shimmer that brings Donkey Kong's world to life.
Several of Nintendo’s familiar icons join the fun, with sculptable models inspired by classic characters like Mario and Bowser.
During the presentation, Nintendo representatives noted that DK Artist mode is intended not only for casual creativity but also as a social experience, suitable for sharing custom designs through the Nintendo eShop and other online features in the future.
Reflecting on the expanded feature set, a Nintendo spokesperson summarized, “DK Artist mode will give players the freedom to express themselves through sculpture and color, making every session a unique adventure.” The showcase hinted that additional base sculptures could be offered as downloadable content, ensuring ongoing value for creative enthusiasts.
Alongside the creative potential, the latest Nintendo Direct highlighted story and gameplay innovations, with Pauline stepping into a pivotal role.
For the first time in the Donkey Kong series, co-op multiplayer allows a second player to join the adventure, harnessing Pauline’s renowned singing abilities both to subdue enemies and manipulate the environment.
This marks a meaningful step in broadening cooperative gameplay, echoing Nintendo’s ongoing commitment to inclusive, family-friendly entertainment.
Donkey Kong Bananza, developed exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2, is set to arrive with a day-one launch available through both physical retailers and the Nintendo eShop.
While a specific release date has yet to be announced, fans eagerly anticipate further updates.
With features like DK Artist mode and robust multiplayer, Donkey Kong Bananza is primed to be a breakout hit, expanding the creative horizons of the classic franchise while fully utilizing the new capabilities of Nintendo's latest console.
