As temperatures continue to soar in Japan and several other regions worldwide, Nintendo has issued an official advisory to remind Nintendo Switch owners about the importance of keeping their consoles cool.
The warning comes as Tokyo recently endured a persistent heatwave with daily highs surpassing 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius), creating challenging conditions for both people and electronics.
In a public message shared via its official Japanese channels, Nintendo warned users that using the Nintendo Switch in high-temperature environments may cause the console’s internal temperature to rise beyond safe limits.
The company recommends operating the device in areas where the ambient temperature stays between 5 and 35 degrees Celsius (41 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit).
Additionally, the company cautioned players against obstructing the air intake and exhaust vents on the hardware—a critical factor for effective cooling and system longevity.
Nintendo’s advisory, translated from its Japanese communication, clearly states: "Playing a Nintendo Switch in environments with excessive heat can lead to increased internal console temperatures.
Please ensure usage takes place in environments between 5 and 35°C (41 and 95°F).
In addition, blocking the air intake or exhaust vents can further elevate console temperatures, so maintaining proper airflow is essential."
While this statement was specifically addressed to Nintendo’s audience in Japan, the guidance is applicable worldwide, especially as many countries face record-breaking summer heat.
Overheating not only puts the Nintendo Switch’s performance at risk but may also cause hardware damage, disrupt gameplay, or reduce the lifespan of the device—all concerns that seasoned gamers, parents, and new users alike should take seriously.
The Nintendo Switch, which launched in March 2017, has enjoyed global success with over 125 million units sold as of 2023.
The hybrid console’s portability is one of its main appeals, but also means it’s more likely to be used in varied environments—sometimes under less-than-ideal conditions for electronics.
With frequent releases highlighted in Nintendo Direct showcases and regular updates to the Nintendo eShop, Switch remains a staple in both casual and dedicated gaming households.
Nintendo’s proactive communication underscores its commitment to customer safety and hardware reliability.
As unusual heatwaves become more frequent, console makers and gamers alike should remain vigilant.
Users are encouraged to ensure good ventilation when playing, avoid covering the Switch’s vents, and keep an eye on local temperatures to protect their devices from overheating.
