Digimon Story: Time Stranger Launches on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 – Release Date, Features, and Pre-Order Details

Bandai Namco’s acclaimed monster-taming RPG, Digimon Story: Time Stranger, is set to make its Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 debut on July 10, following a successful launch across other platforms last year.

After surpassing one million copies sold worldwide, the title expands its reach to the ever-growing Nintendo Switch ecosystem, giving both long-time franchise fans and newcomers another reason to delve into its dual-world adventure. Digimon Story: Time Stranger invites players to journey across time and space, trading between the real world and the Digital World known as Iliad, filled with iconic Digimon.

The story casts players as a secret agent who encounters a mysterious creature before a catastrophic explosion in Tokyo, only to wake up eight years in the past.

As players attempt to uncover the mystery behind their world’s collapse, they’ll forge relationships with dynamic characters and make decisions that impact both timelines. Gameplay centers on classic, strategic turn-based combat, with an expanded roster featuring over 450 Digimon.

Deep customization systems allow players to tailor their Digimon teams with skills and evolutions, enhancing the RPG experience and enabling limitless combat strategies.

The game’s narrative and rich world design invite exploration of detailed, parallel environments, challenging fans to connect the threads of fate and alter their world’s destiny. Digimon Story: Time Stranger introduces distinct technical enhancements on the Switch 2 platform.

Players can choose between 'Performance' mode, offering 4K resolution at 30 frames per second, and 'Quality' mode, which delivers 1080p at a smooth 60 frames per second.

These options, designed to leverage Switch 2 hardware, are exclusive to the new console and unavailable on the original Nintendo Switch. Pre-orders for Digimon Story: Time Stranger are now live on the Nintendo Switch eShop, priced at £54.99 / $59.99.

Early buyers will receive a bonus collection that includes special Digimon—Agumon (Black) and Gabumon (Black)—as well as an exclusive uniform costume set.

For dedicated fans, Bandai Namco offers two premium bundles: the Deluxe Edition (£84.99), which includes a Season Pass and the 'Cyber Sleuth' costume set, and the Ultimate Edition (£104.99), which adds an extra costume pack, the 'Public Safety Suit & Special Supplies Set', the 'Cyber Sleuth BGM Pack', and an early unlock for special versions of Agumon and Gabumon. Digimon Story: Time Stranger earned a mixed critical reception upon its initial release, with Push Square noting the game’s strong potential but citing shortcomings in execution.

Nevertheless, the arrival on Nintendo platforms gives Digimon fans new opportunities to experience the RPG’s unique mechanics and expansive worldbuilding. With its robust sales performance, compelling dual-world narrative, and technical improvements for Switch 2, Digimon Story: Time Stranger is poised to become a major addition to the Nintendo Switch library in 2024.
