HandyGames and Orangepixel have confirmed development of Space Grunts: Chrono Shard for Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, with a digital release planned through the Nintendo eShop worldwide and a release date yet to be announced.

The title expands the Space Grunts series into a time-manipulation, tactical roguelike that combines procedural level design with arcade-velocity combat.

Space Grunts: Chrono Shard places players in the boots of an elite tactical unit tasked with stopping a sentient Ooze that is devouring the galaxy and moving through a hijacked HyperGate network.

Levels are presented as procedurally generated space stations and moon bases trapped in time bubbles; players must secure the Chrono Shard, a device that allows limited manipulation of time to correct mistakes and reposition resources between runs.

In a statement summarising the design goals, publisher HandyGames said the game replaces slow, menu-driven turns with immediate, rapid strategic decisions and introduces a persistent time mechanic called the Chrono Loop.

Under this system, items placed, resources scavenged, and environmental changes made during one run remain in the world for subsequent attempts, enabling players to effectively collaborate with their previous runs by seeding the battlefield with gear and traps.

HandyGames and Orangepixel have outlined key features that will define the Switch and Switch 2 versions:

- Persistent Time-Loops: Changes made during a run can carry over to future attempts, allowing long-term strategies across procedural maps.

- Fast-Paced Turn-Based Strategy: The game aims to deliver turn-based depth at the speed and feel of a retro arcade shooter.

- Evolutionary Skill Trees: Three core skill trees unlock nine elite sub-classes, including Sniper, Assassin, Engineer, and more.

- Advanced Crafting: Players scavenge and disassemble loot at crafting stations to upgrade weapons.

- Kinetic Combat and Physics: Weapon patterns and explosive effects can push enemies into hazards or open paths to Hyper Gates.

- Procedural Sci‑fi Universe: Dynamic space stations, volatile sectors, and moon bases form the game’s environments.

Space Grunts: Chrono Shard will be released digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch worldwide; HandyGames has not yet provided a release date or window.

Developers Orangepixel and publisher HandyGames will likely share further details and platform-specific information in future updates.
