Description

Blizzard’s acclaimed Diablo series has enjoyed significant success on Nintendo’s hybrid hardware, with both Diablo II and Diablo III rated highly by critics and players alike on the Nintendo Switch platform.

With the next generation of Nintendo hardware—commonly referred to as Nintendo Switch 2—on the horizon, fans and industry watchers alike are eager to see if Blizzard’s latest blockbuster, Diablo IV, will make its way to the upcoming console. During a recent interview with Danny Peña, host of GamerTag Radio, Diablo series manager Rod Fergusson addressed the mounting speculation around Diablo IV’s potential appearance on the Switch 2.

While Fergusson did not officially confirm a release, he acknowledged heightened interest, saying the upgraded hardware performance of the new console is well-suited to run a game as ambitious as Diablo IV.

In adapted remarks, Fergusson noted that with Switch 2's improved capabilities, "there is an opportunity to bring the game to another console," signaling Blizzard's clear intent to explore the idea. Despite confirming the technical feasibility, Fergusson highlighted another layer of complexity—offering live service experiences on Nintendo platforms.

"Live services on Switch have posed certain challenges in the past, and my hope is that as Nintendo rolls out their new hardware and future online features, it will become increasingly viable to bring robust live service games like Diablo IV to the system," Fergusson explained.

This underscores how evolving online infrastructure, more than raw hardware power, is central to Blizzard's current considerations for a Diablo IV Switch 2 launch. Currently, fans can still look forward to playing both Diablo II and Diablo III on Nintendo Switch 2 through backwards compatibility, ensuring that the franchise remains accessible as players transition to the next-generation console.

Blizzard’s openness to collaboration with Nintendo—combined with Switch 2’s rumored enhancements and support for features like Mouse Mode—sets the stage for a promising new chapter in the ongoing relationship between the two industry giants. As the Switch 2 approaches its anticipated launch, third-party support continues to look robust, and many gamers hope Diablo IV will join the lineup.

With millions of copies sold across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms since its June 2023 debut, a Nintendo Switch 2 version could open the doors for even more players to experience Blizzard’s latest hack-and-slash epic.

For now, both Blizzard and Nintendo fans should keep a close eye on official announcements in upcoming Nintendo Direct showcases and press releases.
