Diablo IV on Nintendo Switch 2: Blizzard Says Porting Is ‘Something to Look At’

Blizzard Entertainment is keeping the option open to bring Diablo IV to Nintendo’s next hardware, according to Rod Fergusson, who oversees the Diablo franchise.

The developer’s comments come amid continuing interest in how live-service games might be supported on future Nintendo platforms.

Diablo IV launched for PC and home consoles on June 6, 2023, while earlier Diablo titles are already available to Switch owners: Diablo III: Eternal Collection arrived on Nintendo Switch in November 2018 and Diablo II: Resurrected launched in September 2021.

In a recent interview, Fergusson framed the possibility as an opportunity worth examining.

He said Blizzard recognizes that the performance profile of newer Nintendo hardware appears sufficient to run a game like Diablo IV, but emphasized that the real consideration is whether the platform can support the persistent online and live-service features the game requires.

Put plainly, Fergusson noted Blizzard is open to evaluating a Switch port, while stressing that live-service infrastructure on Nintendo platforms has posed challenges in the past and would need to be addressed for a full Diablo IV release.

These comments are notable given the franchise’s existing presence on Nintendo Switch.

Diablo III: Eternal Collection brought the full console experience, including local and online play, to the Switch in November 2018, and Diablo II: Resurrected arrived across platforms in September 2021.

Those releases established a console footprint for the franchise on Nintendo hardware and remain available digitally via the Nintendo eShop.

Corporate context also matters: Blizzard Entertainment is part of Activision Blizzard, which became a subsidiary of Microsoft following the completion of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard on October 13, 2023.

Microsoft and Xbox have a history of cross-platform and multiplatform decisions for acquired studios, but to date Blizzard has not announced any confirmed plans to bring Diablo IV to Nintendo’s next-gen system.

For now, Blizzard’s stance is pragmatic and conditional.

The company says it will continue to evaluate whether the next Nintendo platform can adequately support Diablo IV’s live-service elements before committing to a port.

No formal announcement or release window for a Nintendo version of Diablo IV has been made.
