Cuphead, the critically acclaimed 2D run 'n gun platformer developed by StudioMDHR, is now available for the Nintendo Wii U through a new fanmade port courtesy of Latte Team.
While Cuphead originally launched in 2017 for the Xbox One and PC, and later arrived on the Nintendo Switch in 2019, the Wii U never received an official version.
This new project pays tribute to the game's retro inspirations and fills a gap left by its absence on Nintendo's then-last-generation home console.
By the time StudioMDHR began expanding Cuphead to additional platforms, the Nintendo Wii U was already being phased out, with Nintendo putting its weight behind the more advanced Nintendo Switch.
As such, when Cuphead finally arrived on a Nintendo system, it was as a digital download on the Nintendo Switch eShop, quickly amassing significant sales and fan acclaim.
Now, thanks to Latte Team—a group known for their previous Wii U ports of popular indie titles including Five Nights at Freddy's 2, Kindergarten, and Paratopic—Cuphead can be played natively on the Wii U for the first time.
The newly released Wii U port offers broad controller support, compatible with the WiiMote, Nunchuk, and both Classic and Pro Controllers, ensuring accessibility for a wide range of players.
According to details shared on the GBATemp forums, this version of Cuphead is based on the final update before the Nintendo Switch release and is missing a few features such as multi-language support, achievements, and downloadable content available in later versions.
Nevertheless, it delivers a faithful and fully playable experience for Wii U owners interested in revisiting or discovering Cuphead's signature hand-drawn animation and challenging boss battles.
Latte Team has reiterated their commitment to respecting the rights of original IP holders.
In alignment with their past projects, players are required to supply a legitimate copy of Cuphead to use the port.
Full installation instructions and necessary files can be found on the GBATemp forums, providing resources for those wishing to try the port on their own hardware.
With this release, Latte Team continues its trend of expanding the Wii U homebrew scene and preserving modern indie classics on legacy Nintendo platforms.
The port offers not only a unique way to experience Cuphead but also a glimpse into what might have been had the game released on the Wii U during its commercial lifespan.
