CD Projekt Red, the renowned developer behind The Witcher series, has reported a significant 70% increase in sales revenue for the first half of 2020 compared to the same period in 2019.
This milestone reflects the ongoing strength of its flagship title, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and its remarkable performance on the Nintendo Switch platform.
According to the company’s financial report for H1 2020, CD Projekt Red generated 364 million PLN in sales, with net profit tripling year-over-year to reach 147 million PLN.
This impressive growth underscores the company's diversified approach to both game development and platform expansion, particularly within the Nintendo ecosystem.
Piotr Nielubowicz, Vice President and CFO of CD Projekt, highlighted the sustained demand for The Witcher 3 and emphasized the exceptional sales of its Nintendo Switch version.
In a statement, Nielubowicz credited the "ongoing popularity of The Witcher 3, especially the excellent performance of its Switch edition," as a leading factor in the group’s financial success.
Originally released on other platforms in 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt made its debut on the Nintendo Switch in October 2019, bringing the acclaimed open-world RPG experience to handheld and portable play for the first time.
By early 2020, industry data indicated that the Switch port had already sold approximately 700,000 units in 2019 alone, an impressive figure for a mature title entering a new platform.
While more recent figures have not been disclosed, Switch sales have continued to bolster overall franchise performance.
In addition to The Witcher 3’s achievements, CD Projekt Red expanded its portfolio on Nintendo Switch by releasing Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, a narrative-driven RPG spinoff, and launching GWENT on iOS and Android devices.
These mobile-first initiatives marked a new phase for the studio, broadening access to The Witcher universe across multiple hardware platforms.
Nielubowicz noted that "the new mobile editions have been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from players."
Through effective platform diversification and a focus on quality ports, CD Projekt Red has successfully introduced premium RPG experiences to the Nintendo eShop and Switch audience.
The revenue gains reported for the first half of 2020 are a direct result of this strategy, demonstrating the enduring appeal of The Witcher franchise and the growing importance of Nintendo’s hybrid console as a sales driver for third-party publishers.
