Cyberpunk 2077 Redemption: CD Projekt Red Head Admits Work Remains to Win Back Players

CD Projekt Red acknowledges that the studio still has work to do to repair relationships with some players after Cyberpunk 2077's widely criticized launch.

Released on December 10, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Stadia, Cyberpunk 2077 delivered strong performance on newer hardware like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S but struggled on older consoles at release.

Those problems prompted Sony to temporarily remove the game from the PlayStation Store on December 17, 2020; Sony reinstated Cyberpunk 2077 on the PS Store on June 21, 2021 after multiple patches and remediation efforts.

CD Projekt later issued a free next‑gen update and continued to roll out fixes, and released the Phantom Liberty expansion in September 2023.

The head of CD Projekt Red said the company has not yet completed what he described as a full redemption arc and conceded that the studio lost the faith of some players.

In journalistic terms, he acknowledged: the studio is not fully convinced it has regained all player trust, and accepts that some fans were lost indefinitely, while expressing a clear hope that future projects will help rebuild goodwill.

Cyberpunk 2077's launch and recovery remain among the most closely watched episodes in recent industry history.

CD Projekt Red is best known for The Witcher series—The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015) remains a landmark, critically acclaimed open‑world RPG—and the company has signaled that its next major Witcher project will play a central role in its long‑term reputation.

The studio has publicly framed future entries, including the next Witcher title commonly referred to as The Witcher 4, as opportunities to demonstrate lessons learned from Cyberpunk's rollout.

For developers, platform holders and players, Cyberpunk 2077 is a case study in the risks of multi‑platform releases across several generations of hardware.

CD Projekt Red's recovery path has included sustained patching, a next‑gen update for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S owners, and post‑launch content such as Phantom Liberty.

Whether those efforts fully restore trust will be measured over time, particularly as the studio shifts focus toward new flagship projects that are expected to shape its public standing and commercial prospects.
