Description

Decemberborn Interactive has officially announced Cathedral: Crow’s Curse for the Nintendo Switch, marking an ambitious new addition to its acclaimed action-adventure series.

The Swedish indie studio’s latest title stands as a standalone prequel to the original Cathedral, which garnered praise for its retro-inspired gameplay and its release on the Nintendo Switch.

With Cathedral: Crow’s Curse, Decemberborn Interactive promises a revitalized experience for both longtime fans and newcomers, elevating core mechanics and artistic direction while returning to the beloved universe. Cathedral: Crow’s Curse introduces players to Crow, a formidable Shade Sentinel who was previously featured as a non-playable character in Cathedral.

The narrative invites players to step into Crow’s role as they delve into the enigmatic origins of the Sentinel order.

Set within the shifting boundaries of the Shade Forest, the journey takes adventurers through cursed woodlands and forgotten ruins, challenging them to unearth the dark secrets behind the sentinels’ fateful curse and combat the malevolent forces threatening the land. Gameplay in Cathedral: Crow’s Curse places a strong emphasis on fast, fluid, and skill-based combat.

Players will need to observe enemy patterns, strategically dodge, block, and execute precision attacks to overcome challenging encounters.

The game also places a heavy emphasis on tactical stealth, allowing for a flexible approach to confrontations.

Whether sneaking past patrolling enemies or delivering silent backstabs, players can determine their own strategies in tense, reactive environments.

Enemies themselves respond dynamically to light, sound, and movement, deepening the immersion and challenge. The world of Cathedral: Crow’s Curse is meticulously hand-crafted, featuring both familiar landscapes from the original game and expansive new areas.

Moving beyond Cathedral’s signature 8-bit NES aesthetic, the prequel showcases a refined pixel art style, complete with dynamic lighting effects and fluid character animations.

This artistic evolution not only enhances visual fidelity but also contributes to tighter, more responsive controls, ensuring that exploration and combat feel smoother and more immersive than ever before. Players can look forward to discovering powerful upgrades, unlocking skill trees, and acquiring new movement abilities as they progress.

Every area is designed to reward curiosity, from hidden passageways to intricately interconnected environments, emphasizing exploration and discovery across a seamless world. Eric Lavesson, founder and CTO of Decemberborn Interactive, underscored the studio’s dedication to the project, stating: “Decemberborn Interactive is driven by a passion for creating games that connect with players.

Revisiting the world of Cathedral to share this new story—built from the ground up—has been a labor of love from our entire team.

We hope that care and commitment is evident in every pixel, encounter, and narrative moment of Cathedral: Crow’s Curse.” Cathedral: Crow’s Curse will be available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, joining a growing roster of indie titles on the platform.

While a specific release date has not yet been confirmed, fans can keep an eye out for updates and further news through Nintendo Direct showcases or the eShop. For more on Cathedral: Crow’s Curse and other upcoming Nintendo Switch games, stay tuned to our continuing coverage.
