Intro

The long-running Castlevania franchise is getting an unexpected new life on Sega's 8-bit hardware.

Independent developer xfixium has released a playable demo and follow-up footage of a fan-made port of the original Castlevania to the Sega Master System, offering the community a tangible look at progress on a project that first appeared in reports dating back to January 2023.

Background and context

Castlevania is widely associated with the Nintendo Entertainment System after its 1987 NES release (1986 on Japan's Famicom Disc System), but the series has appeared on many platforms over the decades.

Konami's Castlevania Bloodlines (New Generation) reached Sega's Genesis in 1994, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night saw a Japan-only Saturn port.

The Master System never received an official Castlevania release; that gap is what xfixium's fan project aims to address.

Demo release and technical notes

On February 14, 2026, xfixium published a demo (version 0.1) on the SMS Power Forums, letting players test an early build.

The demo allows toggling between an original visual mode and an enhanced graphics mode and lets users traverse all stages, although several gameplay systems remain unfinished.

The developer reported that power-ups and some enemies are not yet implemented, and players may encounter outstanding bugs.

Work-in-progress footage (October 5, 2026)

On October 5, 2026, xfixium shared additional footage showcasing updated visuals for stages 2, 3, and 5.

The new video makes clear the project is advancing: several enemy sprites remain incomplete, and environmental elements such as candles are still absent in places, but the overall presentation continues to improve.

The developer has emphasized the footage is a work in progress and that certain sprites, including a temporary Trevor Belmont placeholder, are not final assets.

Developer history and technical lineage

xfixium previously worked on fixing the Master System port of Golden Axe, and has acknowledged this Castlevania port draws inspiration from Konami's X68000 version—the same build that influenced Castlevania Chronicles on PlayStation 1. xfixium also described the demo as primarily a proof of concept for scrolling code, code that was later applied to their SMS Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles project.

What players can do now

Interested players can find the v0.1 demo on the SMS Power Forums to test the current build.

The project remains unfinished, but the demo and recent footage provide a clear picture of steady development on a fan-driven effort to bring Castlevania to the Sega Master System.
