SEGA has officially unveiled the theme song and core features for Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, the highly anticipated Sonic racing game set to launch on both Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
Building on the franchise’s legacy of high-speed, action-packed kart racing, Sonic Racing CrossWorlds promises to elevate the experience with new mechanics, an expanded roster, and extensive customization.
The main theme, titled "Cross the Worlds," is performed by James Bourne of Busted and composed by Takahiro Kai, enhancing the game's dynamic atmosphere with a high-energy soundtrack.
SEGA announced that this collaboration aims to reflect the fast-paced adventures that await players when the game hits the Nintendo eShop and retail shelves on September 25, 2025.
While the Nintendo Switch version releases worldwide on that date, a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 edition will arrive later.
Gameplay in Sonic Racing CrossWorlds innovates on past entries with its Travel Rings feature—a gameplay mechanic that brings unprecedented dynamism to each race.
Travel Rings allow racers to warp mid-race into brand-new CrossWorlds, drastically changing the course environment and introducing real-time elements that make every competition unpredictable.
SEGA describes this feature as a fresh twist that leverages unpredictability, pushing players to strategize with each transition.
For fans seeking variety, Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is confirmed to offer the largest character roster in series history.
At launch, racers can select from 23 playable characters spanning the Sonic universe and beyond, with 24 main tracks and 15 CrossWorlds environments.
The game also debuts more than 70 gadgets, allowing for deep pre-race preparation by equipping and combining perks that modify vehicles and power-ups for a tailored racing experience.
Customization extends to the garage, where players can mix and match vehicle parts, powers, and abilities, making each race uniquely their own.
A notable fan-favorite, Extreme Gear—hoverboards introduced in Sonic Riders—will return, allowing for exhilarating new ways to tackle courses.
SEGA has also confirmed robust post-launch support.
Through free updates, new characters from popular SEGA franchises will join the game, including Joker from Persona 5 Royal and Kasuga Ichiban from Like A Dragon, as well as special guests like virtual idol Hatsune Miku.
The Digital Deluxe Edition further expands the lineup with Sonic Prime series characters and a Season Pass featuring new guest racers, vehicles, and tracks inspired by iconic franchises, starting with Minecraft.
With Sonic Racing CrossWorlds, SEGA continues its commitment to providing innovative, content-rich experiences on Nintendo platforms.
As the September 2025 release approaches, anticipation builds for what is poised to become a milestone in Sonic’s racing legacy and a highlight of next-generation racing on Nintendo hardware.
